Monita Onepiece Swimsuit by Elina Vaananen
What is Being Made
The Monita Onepiece Swimsuit is a crocheted one-piece swimsuit designed by Elina Vaananen under the brand Capitana Uncino. This is an intermediate-level crochet project suitable for crafters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle a wearable garment with fitted shaping and specialized construction techniques.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern requires elastic yarn specifically, as the swimsuit design depends on the inherent stretch properties of the yarn for proper fit and function. The yardage needed varies by size:
- Yardage: 525–900 yards (480–820 meters) depending on size
- Weight: 7–10.6 ounces (200–300 grams)
- Yarn Weight Category: Sport weight, DK weight, or light worsted (fine/2, sport/3, or DK/light worsted)
- Recommended Yarns: Rosas Crafts Stretch, Cascade Fixation, Kartopu Marmaris, or Valeria di Roma Elastic
- Hook Size: 3mm (size D/3) to 3.5mm (size E/4)
- Optional: Narrow elastic band for added support
Important Yarn Considerations
The Monita Swimsuit is engineered specifically for elastic yarn. Using non-stretch yarn will require significant adjustments to the pattern and may compromise the fit and function of the finished garment. Checking gauge is essential before beginning, particularly when substituting yarn brands.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
As an intermediate-level project, the Monita Swimsuit employs standard crochet techniques adapted for swimwear construction. The use of elastic yarn combined with appropriate hook sizing creates fabric with the necessary recovery and stretch for a functional one-piece swimsuit. The pattern includes multiple size options, indicating shaping techniques that accommodate different body measurements while maintaining the garment's integrity and fit.
