Moda Fabrics Secret Santa Stocking Quilt – Pattern Summary

The Secret Santa Stocking is a charming and elegant quilted Christmas stocking pattern designed by Moda Fabrics, available as a free downloadable PDF. This intermediate-level quilting project produces decorative fabric stockings perfectly sized for holiday gifting — ideal for filling with chocolates, gift cards, candy canes, or even fat quarters. The pattern is designed to make three stockings per set, with the option to produce six stockings when using the Secret Santa 2 mini HoneyBuns™ included in the Moda Bake Shop box.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates quilted fabric Christmas stockings intended as festive decorations and gift holders. Each stocking features a pieced front panel constructed from colorful fabric strips, a coordinating fabric back, and a decorative ruffled top edge. The finished stockings are designed to be both visually striking and functional as holiday décor.

Materials Required

  • 10 HoneyBun™ strips (1½" x WOF — width of fabric) for the stocking fronts and ruffles; these pre-cut strips are a signature Moda Fabrics product format
  • ¼ yard of backing fabric for the stocking backs (yields three backs cut as 7" x 12½" rectangles)
  • An additional 1½" x WOF strip cut from backing fabric for binding
  • A mechanical pencil for tracing the stocking template onto the wrong side of the backing fabric
  • A ballpoint pen (with point retracted) for smoothing the heel and toe after turning

No yarn, knitting needles, or crochet hooks are required — this is a fabric and thread quilting project worked entirely by sewing machine and hand finishing.

Techniques Used

  • Strip piecing — the foundation of the stocking front, where multiple 1½" HoneyBun™ strips are sewn together into strip sets before cutting
  • Seminole piecing — a traditional quilting technique in which strip sets are cut into segments and then rejoined offset by one square, creating a diagonal, interlocking pattern across the stocking face
  • Pressing in opposing directions — strip sets are pressed in opposite directions to allow seams to nest together neatly when segments are paired, reducing bulk and improving accuracy
  • Segment pairing and offsetting — cut segments are arranged into pairs and offset by one square before sewing, then groups of four pairs are joined and offset again, building up the Seminole-style design row by row
  • Tracing and cutting a shaped pattern piece — the stocking outline is traced onto the wrong side of the backing fabric using a mechanical pencil, then used as a stitching guide
  • Stitch-and-turn construction — the pieced stocking front and marked back are layered right sides together, stitched along the traced line (leaving the top open), trimmed to a ¼" seam allowance, clipped at curves, and turned right side out
  • Backstitching at start and stop — recommended at the beginning and end of the seam to reinforce the turning process
  • Ruffle construction and attachment — two reserved HoneyBun™ strips are joined end to end, pressed, and gathered by hand or machine to form a decorative ruffle; the ruffle is pinned around the top of the stocking so that half stands above the opening, then topstitched in place

Stitches and Sewing Methods

  • Straight stitch — used throughout for all strip piecing, segment joining, stocking assembly, and topstitching
  • Backstitch — used at the start and end of the stocking seam to secure the stitching before turning
  • Gathering stitch — applied by hand or machine to create the ruffle from the reserved strip
  • Topstitch — used to secure the ruffle at the top of the finished stocking
