Product Description
This design uses lovely toning shades for the background and a stand-out contrast for the colour-work yoke. The main part of the back and front is worked in a broken rib pattern. The neckband and base of the yoke have a bold narrow “border” of the contrast colour, which gives a neat and smart highlight to the design.

Mixbury Aran Knit Sweater by Pat Menchini
What is Being Made
Mixbury is an intermediate-level knitted sweater designed by Pat Menchini. This pullover garment is constructed using aran-weight yarn and is available in five size options, ranging from chest measurements of 91-97 cm (36-38 inches) up to 132-137 cm (52-54 inches). The finished sweater features an actual chest width of 102 cm (40 inches) in the smallest size, scaling up to 142 cm (56 inches) in the largest size. The length to shoulder measures between 66-69 cm (26-27 inches) depending on size, with sleeve seams ranging from 47-49 cm (18½-19½ inches).
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This sweater is worked using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern employs stocking stitch as the primary fabric structure, combined with rib pattern sections that provide elasticity and definition. The construction involves working flat pieces that are subsequently seamed together, utilizing stitch holders to manage active stitches during the assembly process. The sweater design incorporates color work, featuring a primary shade paired with a contrasting accent color to create visual interest in the finished garment.
Stitches Used
- Stocking Stitch: The main fabric used throughout most of the sweater body and sleeves, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, V-patterned surface
- Rib Pattern: Elastic ribbed sections that provide structure and recovery, worked at a different gauge than the stocking stitch
Yarn and Needle Specifications
Mixbury is designed to be worked with aran-weight yarn, a medium-heavy yarn suitable for creating substantial, durable knitwear. The pattern calls for King Cole Drifter Aran in shade Rockies (color 4181) as the primary yarn, requiring 6, 6, 7, 7, or 8 balls of 100g (200 metres/219 yards per ball) depending on the selected size. A single 100g ball of King Cole Fashion Aran in shade Black (color 3318) is used as the contrasting color B across all sizes.
Two pairs of knitting needles are required: 4 mm needles (UK size 8, US size 6) and 5 mm needles (UK size 6, US size 8). The pattern specifies a tension of 18 stitches and 25 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) over stocking stitch using the 5 mm needles, while the rib pattern is worked at 22 stitches and 25 rows to 10 cm using the same needle size. Achieving correct tension is essential for proper fit and is particularly important when substituting yarn brands.
Additional notions include 2 stitch holders for managing stitches during construction. The pattern notes that yarn amounts are approximate and based on average requirements, and recommends verifying that any yarn substitutions match the stated tension to ensure successful completion of the garment.
