Product Description

This is the perfect pattern for using up those mini skeins, left over bits of sock yarn, and promo skeins that you've accumulated through the year! And, if you are looking for a quick knit from-the-heart gift for teachers, bus drivers, co-workers, or holiday swaps (or even to decorate your own tree!), this is a super cute and unique option.

The pattern provides instructions for:

a striped sock

a solid sock

a solid sock with contrasting heels, toes & cuffs

Worked toe-up, this mini stocking takes a very short time to knit, especially with the easy short-row heel.

Each sock uses approximately 5 g of fingering weight yarn. A larger size stocking into which you could insert a littel treat can be achieved by using a US 3 (3.25 mm) needle and sport weight yarn.

Mini Stocking Ornament by Keya Kuhn

Project Overview

The Mini Stocking Ornament is a decorative knitting project designed by Keya Kuhn that creates a small, festive stocking suitable for holiday ornaments. This intermediate-level knitted decoration combines classic stocking construction techniques in a miniature format, making it an ideal project for crafters looking to create charming seasonal embellishments.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a tiny stocking ornament featuring traditional stocking shaping with a cuff, leg, heel, foot, and toe sections. The design allows for customization through solid colors, striped patterns, or contrasting color work on the toes and cuff, giving crafters multiple creative options for a single pattern.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Mini Stocking Ornament employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The project utilizes circular needle knitting to create seamless fabric in the round, a method that eliminates the need for seaming and produces a polished finished garment. Stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch) forms the primary fabric structure, creating the smooth, classic appearance characteristic of traditional stockings.

Additional techniques include increases using the kfb method (knit through front and back), which adds stitches for shaping the foot and leg sections. Decreases using k2tog (knit two stitches together) are employed to shape the heel and toe, creating the fitted silhouette of a stocking. The pattern incorporates slip stitch techniques (slip 1 purl-wise) for creating neat edges and transitions between sections. Bind-off finishing completes the ornament professionally.

Stitches and Abbreviations

The pattern uses the following core stitches and abbreviations:

  • K (knit) – the fundamental knit stitch
  • P (purl) – the reverse knit stitch used for textural variation
  • Sl 1 (slip 1 stitch, purl-wise) – slipping stitches for edge definition
  • BO (bind off/cast off) – securing final stitches
  • K2tog (knit 2 stitches together through the front) – a right-leaning decrease for shaping
  • Kftb (knit through the front and back) – a single stitch increase
  • WYIB (with yarn held to the back of the work) – yarn positioning instruction for stitch execution

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Mini Stocking Ornament is worked on US 2 (2.75 mm) circular needles with a recommended cable length of 16 inches or 24 inches, allowing for comfortable working of the small circumference required for a miniature stocking.

Yarn specifications call for fingering weight yarn, with the pattern tested using Cedar Hill Farm Company Traveler, Rocket Sock, or Single Sheep yarns. Yardage requirements vary based on the chosen colorwork approach:

  • Solid color version: 20 yards (4 grams) of a single yarn color
  • Striped version: approximately 12 yards (2.5 grams) each of multiple colors
  • Contrasting toes and cuff version: 12 yards (2 grams) each of contrasting colors for specialized sections

The pattern specifies a gauge of 8.5 stitches by 12 rows per 1 inch in stocking stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions of the miniature ornament.

Additional Notions

Beyond needles and yarn, the pattern recommends a yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing. A locking marker or project keeper is listed as optional, useful for tracking stitch counts and marking pattern sections during the knitting process.
