Product Description
Milse (pron. mil-SHAY) is Gaelic for "sweet things" and that is exactly what this little dress and your darling girl are.
Milse is worked seamlessly in the round, from the top down, starting with a provisional cast (photo tutorial included in the pattern). You make the choice to have long or short sleeves, and you make the choice to have a "bubble" skirt as pictured or a regular skirt.
Milse is a great basic patten to have in your library. In 7 sizes from 6 months to 10 years you will knit it again and again. Easy to knit and easy to wear it can be dressed up or down, solid colour, different stripes, add an intarsia motif, the options are endless and they all start with this pattern.

Milse Seamless Top-Down Knit Dress by JustJussi
What is Being Made
Milse is a sweet knit dress designed for children, available in seven sizes ranging from 6 months to 10 years old. The dress features a chest measurement range of 45.5 cm to 70 cm (18.2 to 28 inches), making it suitable for growing children across multiple age groups. The design offers versatility through two distinct skirt options and two sleeve options, allowing knitters to customize the finished garment to their preferences.
Construction Method
This dress is worked seamlessly in the round from the top down, a popular modern knitting technique that eliminates the need for seaming. Working in the round creates a continuous tube of fabric, which is particularly efficient for garments like dresses that naturally have a circular construction. The top-down approach allows knitters to try on the garment as they progress and easily adjust the length to fit the individual wearer.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Milse dress employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters. Key techniques and stitches used include:
- Knit stitch (k) - the basic foundation stitch used throughout the garment
- Knit two together (k2tog) - a decrease technique that reduces stitch count by combining two stitches into one
- Knit front and back (kfb) - an increase technique that creates an extra stitch by knitting into both the front and back legs of a single stitch
- Garter stitch - created by knitting every row when working flat, or alternating purl and knit rows when working in the round, producing a textured, reversible fabric
- Cast on and cast off (bind off) - the techniques used to begin and finish the knitted fabric
These techniques are combined with increases and decreases to shape the dress, creating shaping at the waist, bust, and armholes as needed for proper fit across the different size ranges.
Yarn and Materials
The Milse dress is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn category that creates a fabric with good drape and structure suitable for children's garments. The pattern specifies approximately 200 to 584 meters (220 to 642 yards) of yarn depending on the size being knitted, with 50 grams equaling 100 meters as the standard yardage calculation.
The designer, Justine Turner of JustJussi, used Rare Earth Essentials 8ply Alpaca and Superfine Merino yarn for the original design. This blend combines the softness and warmth of alpaca fiber with the durability and elasticity of merino wool, creating a comfortable, breathable fabric ideal for children's clothing. The yarn weight and fiber content work together to produce a dress that is both wearable and long-lasting.
Knitters will need appropriate needles sized for DK yarn (typically US 4-6 or 3.5-4mm) and an end-of-round marker to track the beginning of each round when working in the round.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic knit and purl stitches and are comfortable working with increases, decreases, and circular knitting techniques. The seamless in-the-round construction and shaping techniques require attention to detail but provide an excellent project for developing intermediate skills.
