Product Description
This monkey amigurumi pattern has to be one of my cutest creations to-date. It is a simple amigurumi pattern, however as there are colour changes required for the face and the ears, I have rated this crochet pattern as intermediate. In other words, it is helpful if you have a little bit of crochet / amigurumi experience before crocheting.
Milo the Monkey Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
Milo the Monkey is an amigurumi-style crochet toy designed by Cilla Richards. This intermediate-level project creates a stuffed monkey figure suitable for play or decoration. The finished toy is constructed using the magic circle technique and worked in rounds to build three-dimensional form.
Craft and Technique Overview
This pattern uses crochet as the primary construction method. The design employs fundamental amigurumi techniques, which involve creating small stuffed toys by crocheting in continuous rounds and gradually increasing and decreasing stitches to form body parts. The magic circle method is used to begin the pattern, allowing for a tight center point ideal for small toy construction. Consistent tension throughout the project is essential for achieving proper proportions and ensuring the finished toy holds its shape effectively.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) – Foundation stitch used to create base loops
- Single crochet (sc) – Primary stitch for building fabric density in amigurumi
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
- Increase (inc) – Technique for expanding the fabric by working multiple stitches into single stitches
- Decrease (dec) – Technique for reducing fabric width by combining stitches together
Materials and Tools Required
The pattern calls for DK weight yarn in two colors. The primary color is Caramel, requiring 86 grams (129 meters / 141 yards). The secondary color is Nougat, requiring 25 grams (37.5 meters / 41 yards). The recommended yarn is Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/8, where each 50-gram ball provides 75 meters or 82 yards of yardage.
A 3.5 mm (size E) crochet hook is required for working with the DK weight yarn. Additional materials include polyester stuffing for filling the toy, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors for cutting yarn, and pins or stitch markers for tracking progress through rounds. Optional embellishments include 8 mm safety eyes and black embroidery thread for facial details.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to progress beyond basic projects. The intermediate classification reflects the use of magic circle technique, color changes, and the three-dimensional shaping required for successful toy construction.
Pattern Information
The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology. Gauge is not critical for this toy project; however, maintaining consistent tension throughout is important for achieving proper proportions and ensuring even fabric quality. The pattern uses standard crochet abbreviations and includes color change instructions (indicated as cc# followed by the color code) to guide yarn transitions between Caramel and Nougat sections.
