Product Description
Pattern has been graded for 3 sizes, has been tech edited and test knitted, and I've included links to video tutorials to ensure a stressless knit. It is also easy to modify for longer wrist cuff or finger cuff.
Sizes S (M, L): 8” tall x 3 ½” / 20 x 9 cm, (8 x 3 ¾“ / 20 x 9.5cm, 8 ½ x 3 ¾” / 21.5 x 9.5cm)
Construction Worked in the round two at a time using magic loop, starting with ribbing, then working the star pattern across backs and stockinette across palms while shaping for the thumb, separating for the thumb, then working the final ribbing. The thumbs are worked last one at a time.
Yarn Feel free to use any sport weight yarn of your preference in merino, alpaca or a blend. Just be sure you're on gauge and you'll be fine.

Meteor Shower Mitts by Jen Toll Knits
Project Overview
Meteor Shower Mitts are fingerless mitts designed by Jen Toll Knits, featuring a celestial theme with a flurry of stars adorning the backs. These beginner-friendly knitted mitts combine functional warmth with decorative starwork, making them an accessible project for knitters new to colorwork or patterned designs.
What Is Being Made
These are fingerless mitts—hand coverings that leave the fingers exposed for dexterity while providing warmth to the palm, back of hand, and wrist. The mitts are worked in multiple sizes (S, M, L) and stand approximately 8 inches tall, offering coverage from fingertips to mid-forearm.
Construction Technique
The Meteor Shower Mitts are constructed using the magic loop method, allowing both mitts to be worked simultaneously in the round rather than sequentially. This efficient technique reduces the time needed to complete a matching pair and helps ensure consistent sizing and gauge between the two mitts.
The construction follows a logical progression:
- Beginning with ribbing at the cuff for elasticity and a finished edge
- Transitioning to the star pattern across the back of the hand
- Working stockinette stitch across the palm for a smooth, comfortable interior surface
- Shaping for the thumb opening while maintaining pattern integrity
- Separating stitches to create the thumb opening
- Working thumbs individually after the main mitt body is complete
- Finishing with ribbing at the top edge for a polished appearance
Stitches and Pattern Details
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginners:
- Knit (k)—the basic stitch forming the stockinette base
- Purl (p)—used in ribbing for texture and stretch
- Knit through back loop (k1 tbl)—a variation that creates a twisted stitch, often used for decorative or structural purposes
The star pattern is worked across the back of each mitt, creating visual interest while the palms remain in smooth stockinette stitch for comfort and practicality. The ribbing sections—both at the cuff and top—provide elasticity to keep the mitts securely in place on the wrist.
Tools and Materials
The Meteor Shower Mitts are worked using double-pointed needles (dpns), which are essential for working in the round with the magic loop technique. The pattern calls for sport weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that produces a delicate, fitted fabric ideal for fingerless mitts that won't feel bulky or restrictive.
Sport weight yarn is thinner than worsted weight but thicker than fingering weight, striking a balance between drape and durability. This weight is particularly suitable for projects requiring precision in colorwork and shaping, as the thinner yarn allows for clearer stitch definition in the star pattern.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Meteor Shower Mitts are accessible to knitters new to the craft. While the pattern introduces concepts like working in the round, magic loop construction, and basic colorwork with the star motif, each element is fundamental enough for beginners to learn and execute successfully. The straightforward stitch vocabulary and logical construction sequence make this an ideal project for building confidence in round knitting.
