Product Description

FINISHED SIZE 51 in (130cm) wide (tip to tip) 17.5in (45cm) deep (neck to point in back)

The shawl is knit side to side and can easily be made larger by adding repeats.

This design is suitable for the beginning lace knitter who is ready to take on a more adventurous project. Pattern uses the following stitches: k2tog, ssk, lldd (left-leaning double decrease), rldd (right-leaning double decrease), cdd(centered double decrease).

The pattern is best suited to solid color or tonal yarns. Variegated yarns will detract from the geometric lace motif. A gradient or slow-striping yarn should work well.

Mergoum Shawlette by Sheila O'Keefe

What is Being Made

The Mergoum is a triangular shawlette designed as a versatile neck wrap. With finished dimensions of 51 inches (130 cm) wide from tip to tip and 17.5 inches (45 cm) deep from neck to back point, this shawl offers elegant drape and coverage suitable for layering or wearing as a statement accessory. The triangular construction makes it an ideal project for knitters seeking a classic shawl silhouette with practical wearability.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs fundamental shawl construction techniques. The design utilizes charted instructions alongside written row-by-row guidance, allowing knitters to follow either format based on personal preference. The pattern incorporates increases as a primary shaping method to achieve the triangular form, with specific increase techniques detailed throughout the pattern rows. Knitters will work from a small cast-on edge and progressively expand the piece through strategic stitch additions, a hallmark of top-down or tip-to-tip shawl construction.

Stitches Used

The Mergoum shawlette features a straightforward stitch vocabulary appropriate for intermediate knitters. Key stitches include:

  • Knit (k) – the foundational stockinette stitch base
  • Purl (p) – used to create texture and pattern variation
  • Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase technique that creates two stitches from one, used to expand the shawl width
  • Slip stitch (sl) – employed for edge definition and neat finishing

The pattern works primarily in stockinette stitch, the smooth, classic knit fabric that showcases yarn texture and drape. Charted symbols guide stitch placement and pattern repeats, making the construction logical and easy to track across rows.

Materials

The Mergoum requires 400 yards of fingering weight yarn, a fine, delicate yarn weight that produces intricate fabric and beautiful drape ideal for shawlettes. The recommended gauge is 5.75 stitches and 7 rows per inch (2.54 cm) in stockinette stitch, achieved using US #6 (4 mm) circular needles in a 24-inch length. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and one stitch marker to track pattern repeats. This minimal notions list keeps the project focused on knitting fundamentals.
