Mercedes Mittens Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

The Mercedes Mittens are a pair of regular men's size mittens designed by Hilde Ropstad of Småtterier. These mittens feature colorwork design and are sized to fit an average adult male hand. The mittens measure approximately 31 cm in length, 23 cm in circumference, with an 8 cm hand width and 24 cm cuff length, making them a substantial winter accessory.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs colorwork knitting in the round as its primary technique. The mittens are constructed using the traditional method of knitting circularly on double-pointed needles, which allows for seamless construction and even fabric development. The colorwork gauge is specifically noted at 32 stitches and 32 rows per 10 centimeters when working the patterned sections, ensuring proper fit and fabric density. The pattern includes standard shaping techniques such as increases and decreases to form the mitten shape and thumb opening.

Stitches Used

The Mercedes Mittens utilize fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for colorwork construction. The primary stitches employed include knit stitches for the base fabric and knit 2 together (K2tog) decreases for shaping the mitten crown and managing stitch counts. Increases are used to expand stitches where needed, particularly around the thumb gusset area. The pattern is worked in the round using circular knitting methods, which creates a seamless fabric ideal for mittens.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Mercedes Mittens pattern calls for Rauma Finull yarn, a 2-ply, 100% wool yarn in sport or fine weight classification. The yarn yields approximately 175 metres per 50 grams. The pattern requires approximately 30 grams of main color (white) and 25 grams of contrast color (red/black) for the two-color colorwork design. Alternative yarn options include Pernilla by Filcolana and 2 tr ull by Järbo garn, both of which provide similar weight and yardage characteristics.

Tools and Notions Required

  • 3.0 mm double-pointed needles (dpns) or the size necessary to achieve the specified gauge
  • Stitch holder or scrap yarn for holding thumb stitches during construction
  • Darning needle for weaving in ends and finishing

Pattern Details and Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, the Mercedes Mittens require knitters to be comfortable with colorwork techniques, circular knitting on double-pointed needles, and basic shaping methods. The two-color design adds visual interest while the structured sizing and clear measurements ensure a professional finished product. This pattern is designed for personal use only and is protected under copyright by Hilde Ropstad and Småtterier.
