Product Description
MEGAN - a nice and cosy and beautiful Fair Isle jumper I made many years ago in a Shetland wool. But it deserves a renaissance for which I am bringing it up again. The pattern describes the Fair Isle way of working this jumper - all in rounds. Drop-sleeves worked from top towards cuffs. Detailed written pattern with charts. Included in the pattern is also how to expand the bust width. Suitable for all age groups. Skill level from 1 (beginner) to 5 (advanged): 5. The measurements throughout the pattern are given in cm as well as inches.
Material: this design applies to a 4-ply fingering-weight shetland type wool, 50 g = ca. 210 meters. Intotal 400 g divided in 4 colours.
Originalen is worked in a Shetland wool from Hunters of Brora, but sadly it does not exist anymore. This wool was the same type and weight almost as Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift which would be a good alternative.
Tension/gauge in stocking st: 28 sts using needles no 3 mm = 10 cm (4 in).

What is Being Made
MEGAN is an advanced-level knitted Fair Isle jumper designed as a downloadable PDF pattern. This garment features traditional Fair Isle colorwork techniques with coordinated stripe patterns integrated throughout the design. The jumper is constructed as a seamless piece worked primarily in the round, with sleeves picked up from the armholes and worked downward for a modern construction approach.
Fair Isle Colorwork Techniques
The pattern employs authentic Fair Isle methodology with a strict two-color-per-row rule throughout the design. The colorwork is organized across three detailed charts (Chart I, Chart II, and Chart III), with Chart III specifically governing the stripe color sequence. The stripe patterns run continuously across all Fair Isle motifs from Charts I and II, creating a cohesive visual flow across the entire garment. This approach requires careful attention to color changes and yarn management to maintain the integrity of the traditional Fair Isle aesthetic.
Construction and Shaping Techniques
MEGAN employs several advanced knitting techniques to achieve its finished structure:
- Seamless Construction: The body is worked as a complete piece without side seams, utilizing strategic decreasing around marked side points to shape the garment
- Decrease Placement: Decreases are worked by knitting 2 stitches together after the side marker and working 2 stitches together through the back loop before the side marker, with 2 stitches maintained between decrease points for clean shaping
- Sleeve Attachment: Sleeves are picked up directly from the armholes and worked downward, eliminating the need for sleeve cap shaping and seaming
- Personalization Options: The pattern includes guidance for customizing the finished jumper, allowing knitters to adapt the design to individual preferences
Stitches and Edge Finishing
The pattern incorporates multiple stitch techniques essential to the Fair Isle jumper:
- Stockinette Stitch: The primary stitch base for the Fair Isle colorwork sections
- Garter Stitch: Used for specific sections, worked by knitting all stitches on right-side rows and wrong-side rows when working flat, or alternating knit and purl rounds when working in the round
- Casting On: The pattern specifies a knotted edge cast-on using the thumb method, worked with double yarn on the left hand and right-hand yarn wrapped around the needle between each cast-on stitch to create a secure, decorative edge
- Casting Off: Finished edges such as the neck band and front bands require careful tension management, with the pattern recommending a needle half a size larger than the working needle to achieve appropriate firmness or slack as needed for each edge type
Materials and Yarn Specifications
MEGAN is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a fine yarn that allows for detailed Fair Isle colorwork definition and creates a lightweight, wearable jumper. The pattern requires two colors of yarn for the Fair Isle sections, with the specific color sequence detailed in Chart III. Knitters will need appropriately sized needles for 4-ply yarn, with an additional needle half a size larger reserved for casting on and casting off edge work. The downloadable PDF format includes all necessary charts and detailed written instructions across 10 pages.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as advanced difficulty, appropriate for experienced knitters comfortable with Fair Isle colorwork, seamless garment construction, and managing multiple color changes across complex charts. The combination of two-color-per-row Fair Isle technique, stripe integration, and seamless shaping requires strong foundational skills and the ability to read and follow detailed colorwork charts simultaneously.
