Mat Stitch Handtowel by Amber Killian
Project Overview
The Mat Stitch Handtowel is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed by Amber Killian that combines elegant aesthetics with practical durability. This handtowel is versatile enough to serve as a thoughtful gift while remaining sturdy enough for everyday use. The finished dimensions are 14.5" x 16", making it an appropriately sized accessory for kitchen or bathroom spaces.
What Is Being Made
This project creates a functional handtowel featuring a decorative mat stitch pattern. The design balances visual interest with wearability, offering an elegant appearance that belies its straightforward construction. The handtowel is sized for practical use while maintaining a refined presentation suitable for gifting.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
The Mat Stitch Handtowel employs a repeating fan stitch pattern that works up quickly, making it an ideal choice for crafters seeking rapid project completion. The pattern is easily customizable by adjusting the foundation chain—simply work a multiple of 6 stitches, then add 2 additional chains to establish the correct stitch count. This flexibility allows crafters to resize the finished piece according to their preferences without requiring significant pattern modifications.
Stitches Used
- Chain (CH): Used to establish the foundation and create spacing within the pattern
- Double Crochet (DC): The primary stitch forming the structure of the piece
- Fan Stitch: The signature stitch pattern, worked as (DC, CH 1, DC, CH 1, DC) all within the same stitch or space, creating decorative fan-shaped elements
- V Stitch: A secondary stitch variation worked as (DC, CH 1, DC), adding textural variety
Gauge and Sizing
The recommended gauge for this project is approximately 4 fan stitches and 8 rows per 4 inches when working in the mat stitch pattern. This gauge measurement ensures the finished handtowel achieves the intended dimensions of 14.5" x 16".
Materials Required
- Yarn: 186 yards of worsted weight (#4 gauge) cotton or cotton blend yarn. Suggested options include Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, Lily Sugar'n Cream, or Dishie brand yarns, though any comparable worsted weight cotton or cotton blend is suitable
- Hook: 4.0 mm (G/6) crochet hook
- Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends; stitch markers are optional but recommended for tracking pattern repeats
Skill Level and Suitability
Classified as a beginner-level project, the Mat Stitch Handtowel is accessible to newer crocheters while remaining engaging for experienced crafters. The straightforward stitch pattern and rapid work-up time make this an excellent choice for last-minute gift creation. The project's resizable nature and quick completion timeline enhance its appeal for crafters working within time constraints.
