What is Being Made

The Masgot Wrap is a generous rectangular shawl designed by independent knitwear designer Justyna Lorkowska. This knitted wrap measures approximately 50 cm (20 inches) wide and 190 cm (75 inches) long, making it a versatile accessory suitable for draping, wrapping, or layering. The design features a striped color pattern created through strategic yarn color changes throughout the knitting process.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using the knitting craft. The Masgot Wrap is classified as a beginner-level knitting pattern, making it an excellent choice for knitters who are developing their foundational skills and seeking to expand their technical repertoire.

Stitches and Techniques Used

The Masgot Wrap employs several key knitting techniques:

• Garter Stitch: The primary stitch structure used throughout the striped body of the wrap, creating a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges
• Short Rows with Wrap-and-Turn Method: An advanced shaping technique used to create the wrap's construction. The wrap-and-turn method involves wrapping yarn around stitches at turning points to prevent holes and maintain fabric integrity. Wraps do not need to be picked up in Garter stitch as they remain invisible in the finished fabric
• Garter Stripe Pattern: The striped body is worked by alternating between two contrast colors every two rows, creating a consistent striped effect while carrying unused colors up the side of the work rather than breaking yarn

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Masgot Wrap is designed for 4-ply (fingering weight) yarn. The pattern was originally created using 5 skeins distributed across 3 colors of Martin's Lab Merino Singles, a 100% merino wool yarn offering 366 meters (400 yards) per 100 grams.

The original colorway distribution is as follows:

• CC1 – Inferno: 2 skeins
• CC2 – Altair: 2 skeins
• CC3 – Warsaw Flamingo: 1 skein

Alternatively, any fingering weight yarn in 3 colors may be substituted, provided yardage requirements are met. The pattern begins with a cast-on of 140 stitches and includes 58 rows of striped Garter stitch patterning.
