Margaux Jumper Knitting Pattern by Debbie Bliss – Full Pattern Summary

The Margaux Jumper is a women's knitted sweater pattern designed by Debbie Bliss, worked in her Piper DK yarn. This intermediate-level knitting pattern produces a stylish, colourwork jumper featuring a striking diagonal colour-block design created through the intarsia technique, combined with horizontal stripe sections. The finished garment is seamed and constructed from the bottom up, making it an excellent project for knitters who are comfortable with flat knitting and are ready to explore more advanced colourwork methods.

What Is Being Made

The Margaux is a classic women's pullover jumper with set-in or drop-shoulder-style sleeves and a ribbed hem and cuff finish. It is sized to fit a wide range of bust measurements:

  • To fit bust: 81–86, 92–97, 102–107, 112–117, and 122–127 cm (32–34, 36–38, 40–42, 44–46, 48–50 in)
  • Finished bust: 100, 111, 118, 131, and 142 cm (39¼, 43¾, 46½, 51½, and 56 in)
  • Length to shoulder: 56, 58, 60, 62, and 64 cm (22, 22¾, 23½, 24½, and 25¼ in)
  • Sleeve length: 46 cm / 18 in (consistent across all sizes)

The generous finished measurements provide a comfortable, relaxed fit with positive ease across all sizes, making the Margaux a wearable, everyday jumper with a contemporary colour-blocked aesthetic.

Design Features and Colourwork

The defining visual feature of the Margaux is its bold diagonal colour-block design on the body, achieved through the intarsia technique. Intarsia is a method of knitting separate blocks of colour using individual yarn bobbins or small yarn butterflies for each colour section, rather than carrying yarn across the back of the work as in stranded colourwork. This results in a clean, flat fabric with no floats on the wrong side, which is particularly important when working with larger blocks of colour.

The diagonal line shifts progressively across the rows, giving the illusion of a sweeping diagonal divide across the front and back of the jumper. This is achieved by increasing the number of stitches in one colour section and decreasing in the other on a row-by-row basis, creating that characteristic angled transition.

In addition to the intarsia colour-blocking, the pattern also incorporates stripe sections — horizontal bands worked in a single colour across all stitches — which frame and complement the diagonal colourwork panels. These stripes are worked in straightforward stocking stitch and add rhythm and structure to the overall design.

Colours Used

Three colourways of Debbie Bliss Piper are specified in this pattern:

  • Colour A – Cloud 02: 1(1:1:2:2) × 100g balls
  • Colour B – Blush 11: 3(4:4:5:5) × 100g balls
  • Colour C – Snow 01: 1 × 100g ball (used across all sizes)

The palette of Cloud, Blush, and Snow creates a soft, tonal, and feminine colourway that is both modern and versatile. Blush 11 is the dominant colour, forming the main body of the jumper, while Cloud 02 and Snow 01 appear as accent colours within the intarsia diagonal sections.

Construction Method

The Margaux Jumper is worked flat (back and forth in rows) and constructed bottom up, beginning at the lower ribbed hem and working upward toward the shoulders. The individual pieces — front, back, and sleeves — are then seamed together to complete the garment. This traditional construction method gives the finished jumper excellent structure and shape retention.

Working flat and seaming is a classic approach well-suited to colourwork garments, as it allows the knitter to
