Product Description

This cozy raglan sweater is an updated version of your favorite old sweatshirt. With or without the optional folded cuffs and front pocket, it's perfect for crisp autumn days.

The sweater is worked from the top down in one piece, back and forth to end of the neck shaping and then the rest of the way in the round. The back collar gives the casual look of a hoodie from the front without the bulk of an actual hood.

Marais Pullover by Triona Murphy

What is Being Made

The Marais Pullover is a cozy raglan sweater designed by Triona Murphy as an updated version of a classic sweatshirt silhouette. This pullover sweater is available in seven sizes ranging from extra-small through 3X, with finished bust measurements from 29.25 inches (74.5 cm) for XS up to 51.25 inches (130 cm) for 3X. The garment features optional design elements including folded cuffs and a front pocket, allowing knitters to customize their finished piece. The sample shown is a size medium with 1 inch of negative ease, demonstrating how the sweater fits close to the body.

Craft and Primary Technique

This is a knitting project suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The Marais Pullover employs the raglan construction method, which is a classic sweater-building technique where the sleeves are increased gradually from the neckline down to the armholes, creating diagonal seam lines from the neck to the underarms. This construction method is popular for its comfortable fit and elegant visual lines.

Stitches and Stitch Work

While specific stitch patterns are not detailed in the provided pattern information, the raglan construction technique typically involves working stockinette stitch as the primary fabric with strategic increases along the raglan lines. The optional folded cuffs and front pocket add textural and functional elements to the design. Knitters working this pattern should expect to use fundamental knitting stitches and increases appropriate to intermediate skill levels.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Marais Pullover is designed to be worked with sport-weight yarn. The recommended yarn is Blue Moon Fiber Arts BFL Sport, which is 100% wool with 661 yards (604 meters) per 226-gram skein. The colorway shown in the pattern sample is Manly Yes, But I Like It Too. Yardage requirements vary by size: XS and S require 2 skeins, while M, L, 1X, 2X, and 3X each require 3 skeins. In total yardage, knitters will need approximately 1130 yards (1033 meters) for XS, 1280 yards (1170 meters) for S, 1400 yards (1280 meters) for M, 1530 yards (1399 meters) for L, 1660 yards (1518 meters) for 1X, 1830 yards (1673 meters) for 2X, and 2010 yards (1838 meters) for 3X. Yarn substitutions are acceptable as long as the substitute is sport-weight yarn with yardage matching these specifications.

Needles and Tools

The pattern calls for US #3 [3.25 mm] circular needles in lengths ranging from 28 to 40 inches depending on the size being worked. Knitters will also need a US #3 [3.25 mm] set of 4 or 5 double-pointed needles for working smaller circumferences, such as the cuffs and other ribbed sections. As with all knitting patterns, knitters should check their gauge and adjust needle sizes if necessary to achieve the correct finished measurements.

Design Characteristics

The Marais Pullover combines comfort with contemporary styling. The raglan sleeve construction creates a relaxed, wearable fit reminiscent of a favorite vintage sweatshirt, while the optional design features—folded cuffs and front pocket—add practical functionality and visual interest. The negative ease option shown in the sample demonstrates that this sweater can be worked close to the body for a more fitted silhouette, or with positive ease for a relaxed, oversized appearance depending on knitter preference.
