Product Description

The socks are knitted from the cuff down to the toe. Begin using the Long-tail Tubular Cast-on method for a neat edge, then continue in 1x1 Rib to give enough elasticity to the cuff. Work the leg of the socks in a brocade pattern, called Lattice stitch pattern. In order to create a sturdy and durable, yet beautiful heel, work the heel flap in the Rosette stitch pattern, then turn the heel using some short rows. After decreasing to create the gussets and get back to the original number of stitches, work the foot, then finish the socks either with the Short, Medium or Long Sideways Toe.

Mara Socks by Zsuzsanna Orthodoxou

Project Overview

Mara socks are an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Zsuzsanna Orthodoxou. These socks showcase decorative stitch patterns combined with functional construction techniques, making them suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to explore textured stitch work and heel shaping methods.

What Is Being Made

This pattern provides instructions for knitting a pair of socks from the cuff down to the toe. The design features a coordinated approach to each section of the sock, with different stitch patterns used strategically throughout the leg, heel, and foot to balance aesthetics with durability and comfort.

Construction Method

The socks are worked using a cuff-down construction, beginning at the top of the sock and progressing downward to the toe. This top-down approach allows for easy fitting adjustments and the ability to try on the socks as you work.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Long-tail Tubular Cast-on: Creates a neat, professional edge at the cuff opening
  • 1x1 Rib: Worked in the cuff section to provide elasticity and ensure the socks stay up during wear
  • Lattice Stitch Pattern: A decorative brocade pattern used on the leg of the socks for visual interest
  • Rosette Stitch Pattern: Applied to the heel flap to create a sturdy, durable, and visually appealing heel section
  • Short Rows: Used for heel turning to shape the heel cup properly
  • Gusset Decreases: Worked after the heel turn to transition from the heel section back to the original stitch count for the foot
  • Sideways Toe Options: Three finishing options are provided—Short, Medium, or Long Sideways Toe—allowing customization based on personal preference

Materials

The pattern was designed in collaboration with The Fibre Co. through their yarn support programme for independent designers. The socks are created using 4-ply yarn weight, which is ideal for sock knitting as it provides durability while maintaining a comfortable fit. The designer specifically tested and recommends Amble, The Fibre Co.'s sock yarn, for this project, though any 4-ply yarn suitable for sock knitting may be used. Standard sock knitting needles appropriate for the chosen yarn weight are required.

Design Features

Mara socks balance decorative elements with practical sock construction. The Lattice stitch pattern on the leg provides visual appeal, while the Rosette stitch on the heel flap ensures durability in an area subject to wear. The inclusion of multiple toe finishing options gives knitters flexibility to customize the final appearance and fit of their socks.
