Madeline Rib Hat by Alena Byers
What Is Being Made
The Madeline Rib Hat is a versatile knitted beanie designed by independent designer Alena Byers. This hat offers styling flexibility, allowing you to wear it as a traditional beanie or with a pointed crown depending on how much you fold the brim. The design is available in multiple sizes ranging from Baby through Medium Adult, making it suitable for various age groups and head sizes.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project classified at an intermediate skill level. The hat employs fundamental knitting techniques combined with ribbed stitch patterning to create a fitted, elastic garment that hugs the head comfortably. The construction method allows for customization in the finished appearance through brim folding, giving knitters creative control over the final look.
Stitches Used
- 1x1 Rib Pattern – The primary stitch used throughout much of the hat, creating vertical lines of texture and natural stretch
- Stockinette Stitch – Used in sections of the design for contrast and varied texture
Gauge and Measurements
Accurate gauge is essential for this project. The pattern specifies 21 stitches and 22 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) over the 1x1 Rib Pattern when blocked and unstretched. For Stockinette Stitch sections, the gauge is 13 stitches and 20 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) when blocked. Taking time to check your gauge before beginning ensures proper fit across all size options.
Materials
This pattern calls for chunky weight yarn, which works up quickly and creates a warm, substantial fabric ideal for cold-weather wear. You will need appropriate knitting needles sized for chunky yarn, typically larger needles that accommodate the thicker yarn weight while maintaining the specified gauge.
Format
The Madeline Rib Hat is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing you to access the complete instructions immediately upon purchase and print or view them on your device while knitting.
