Product Description

This written crochet pattern (in US terms) provides instructions to make a baby blanket, approximately 90 cm x 70 cm.

A corner to corner design, the blanket works up easily and quickly. Clear diagonal stripes give a lovely texture to the end result, and this blanket makes makes the perfect gift for any baby, boy or girl.

The pattern calls for yarn in only one colour (although more than one colour could also be used), dove grey. Approximately 4.5 skeins of yarn (each 100 g) are used to complete the blanket.

The only additional material required is a darning needle, with which to weave in the ends.

This baby blanket, in a gender-neutral colour (as the parents have chosen to be surprised at the birth of their baby), was designed and made for a very special teacher, who becomes a first-time mommy very soon! Teachers can have a beautiful and powerful influence on little lives - my family and I are so grateful and blessed to say that this has been true!

Made with Love Baby Blanket

Project Overview

The Made with Love Baby Blanket is a beginner-friendly crochet blanket designed by Kirstin Campbell-Harris of Crafty Creations. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 90 cm x 70 cm, making it an ideal size for a newborn or infant. The blanket is worked in a soft dove grey colorway, perfect for a gender-neutral nursery gift or keepsake project.

Materials Required

This project uses DK weight yarn, with approximately 1105 to 1145 meters of yardage needed. The designer used Kismet's 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day DK in the colour Silver, requiring approximately 1.5 skeins of 300 g each. A G (4.00 mm) crochet hook is used throughout the pattern, along with a darning needle for weaving in ends.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This beginner-level blanket incorporates several fundamental crochet techniques that make it accessible for newer crocheters while still creating visual interest. The pattern uses standard US crochet terminology and abbreviations throughout.

  • Double Crochet (dc): A foundational stitch that forms the primary fabric of the blanket, worked to a gauge of approximately 5 stitches per inch (2.4 cm) horizontally and 5 rows per inch vertically
  • Chain Stitch (ch): Used for foundation chains and throughout the pattern as a structural element
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): Employed to join rounds or connect sections of the blanket
  • Puff Stitch (puff st): A special stitch technique that adds texture and dimension to the blanket design, created by wrapping yarn around the hook and pulling loops through in a specific sequence
  • Reverse Single Crochet (rev sc): Also known as crab stitch, this edging technique creates a decorative, textured border
  • Increases and Decreases: Shaping techniques used to create the blanket's structure and form

Pattern Structure

The pattern uses clear abbreviations and includes sections for special stitches with detailed explanations. Instructions reference wrong side (WS) orientation and include turning chains (tch) for proper stitch alignment. The pattern notation uses parentheses for additional information and guidance, and includes directional notes such as "continue" (cont), "alternate" (alt), and "beginning" (beg) to guide crocheters through each row or round.

Skill Level

Rated as a beginner project, this blanket is suitable for crocheters new to the craft who have mastered basic stitches. The straightforward stitch combinations and clear pattern instructions make it an excellent choice for building confidence while creating a meaningful handmade gift.
