Product Description
This dress was designed for my granddaughter; it is a fun knit that will look super cute on babies of all ages. The skirt alternates panels of stocking stitch with reverse stocking stitch to create pleats. These are designed to be oversized and flared, before decreasing into a garter waistband. The top has stocking stitch on the front and garter on the back to pull the whole effect together.
Mabel Knit Dress by Emma Sadler
What is Being Made
Mabel is a charming knitted dress designed for babies and infants, created by independent designer Emma Sadler. This downloadable PDF pattern produces an oversized, flared dress with a playful construction that combines multiple knitting techniques to create visual interest and movement in the garment.
Design Features and Construction
The dress is structured in two main sections: a voluminous skirt and a fitted top. The skirt showcases alternating panels of stocking stitch and reverse stocking stitch, which create elegant pleats throughout. These pleated panels are designed to be generously oversized and flared, then strategically decreased as they transition into a garter stitch waistband. The top portion features stocking stitch on the front for a smooth, refined finish, while the back is worked in garter stitch to balance the overall aesthetic and provide structure to the garment.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Knitting in the round: The skirt and waistband are knitted circularly, making this an excellent introductory project for knitters new to circular needle techniques
- Flat knitting: The front and back of the top are knitted flat separately, then integrated into the finished garment
- Stitch pattern alternation: Strategic placement of stocking stitch and reverse stocking stitch creates dimensional pleating without requiring complex decreases
- Decreasing: Shaping transitions the flared skirt into the fitted waistband
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch: Creates a smooth, classic knit fabric on the dress front and skirt panels
- Reverse stocking stitch: Used in alternating skirt panels to create textural contrast and the illusion of pleats
- Garter stitch: Forms the waistband and back top, providing elasticity and a decorative ridged texture
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a lightweight option ideal for delicate baby garments. The sample garment was knitted using Paintbox Yarns Baby DK in the colourway Misty Grey 703, a yarn blend of 45% Acrylic and 55% Nylon that offers durability and easy care for infant clothing. DK weight yarn works beautifully with standard knitting needles appropriate for this weight category, allowing for fine stitch definition and a refined drape.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, Mabel is an ideal project for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to expand their skills. It provides an excellent introduction to circular knitting while incorporating flat knitting sections, making it a well-rounded learning experience without overwhelming complexity.
Available Sizes
The pattern is available in Preemie and Newborn sizes, making it suitable for a range of baby ages and proportions.
