Materials: You’ll need worsted weight yarn and an E US/3.5 mm crochet hook. Two colours of yarn, white (3/4 of a 100 yard skein) and beige (a leftover will do). The quantities are estimates. For the eyes I’ve used 8 mm animal eyes and I have needle-felted a nose. An animal safety nose or embroidered one will work too. You also need fibrefill and pellets for a bit of extra weight in the body (I use Hama beads), and a pipe cleaner in the tail is optional. Lopi colour numbers: 0051and 0086.
Lumi the Arctic Fox Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
Lumi is a small crocheted arctic fox amigurumi-style toy designed by Sonja van der Wijk. When made with the recommended yarn and tension, the finished fox measures approximately 5.5 inches (14 centimeters) in sitting height, making it an ideal small decorative toy or gift item. The compact size and beginner-friendly difficulty level make this pattern accessible to crocheters of varying experience levels.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques suitable for beginners. The arctic fox is worked in the round using continuous spirals, a standard method for creating three-dimensional stuffed toys. The designer recommends using a stitch marker to clearly identify the beginning of each round, moving it upward as new rounds progress to maintain pattern clarity and prevent counting errors.
Color changes are incorporated into the design, with specific instructions provided for seamless transitions between colors. When changing yarn colors, the pattern directs crocheters to change color in the last loop of a stitch, ensuring that the new color appears in the subsequent stitch rather than in the transition stitch itself. This technique creates cleaner color work and more polished finished edges.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes standard American crochet terminology throughout. While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided content, typical amigurumi construction relies on fundamental stitches including single crochet for tight, dense fabric suitable for stuffed toys, and increases and decreases to shape the fox's body, head, ears, and facial features.
Materials and Yarn
The pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn, with the designer strongly recommending fuzzy yarn varieties for optimal results. The specific yarn used in the original pattern is Istex Lètt lopi, a 100% wool fiber that provides the soft, textured appearance ideal for an arctic fox design.
Crochet hook size is not specified in the provided pattern excerpt, though hook selection should be appropriate for worsted weight yarn to achieve the recommended finished dimensions. The finished toy requires standard amigurumi materials including fiberfill stuffing and embroidery supplies for facial details such as eyes and nose.
Pattern Notes for Crocheters
The finished size of Lumi is dependent on both the yarn weight used and individual crochet tension. Crocheters working tighter or looser than the designer's tension may produce a fox of different dimensions. The designer recommends experimenting with eye size recommendations based on the final proportions of your completed fox, allowing for customization and personal preference in the finished appearance.
