Lottchen Double-Layered Knit Hat by Daniela Mühlbauer

What Is Being Made

Lottchen is a sophisticated double-layered knit hat designed by independent designer Daniela Mühlbauer. The hat features two distinct layers that work together to create both structure and warmth—one layer serves as the visible exterior while the second layer folds inside to function as a built-in lining. This innovative construction method allows for creative color play and personalization while maintaining a polished finished appearance. The pattern is available in five sizes ranging from XS (suitable for head circumferences up to 40cm/15.75") through XL (55cm and above/21.6"+), making it adaptable for various head sizes from children to adults.

Design Flexibility and Color Options

One of the defining characteristics of Lottchen is its versatility in yarn selection and colorwork. Knitters can choose to work the hat using a single solid yarn for a classic, unified look, or they can incorporate multiple yarns to create colorful stripes or bold block stripes. The sample garments showcase this flexibility: the XS, S, and M sizes were each knitted using two contrasting colors, the L size demonstrates a sophisticated single-color approach, and the XL version combines three different yarns for a striking multi-colored effect. This design flexibility makes Lottchen suitable for both minimalist and adventurous color preferences.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

Lottchen employs fundamental knitting techniques executed at an intermediate skill level. The hat is worked in the round, a standard approach for seamless hat construction that eliminates the need for seaming. The double-layer construction requires knitters to work to double the finished length before folding, as one complete layer will be folded inside and hidden. The actual knitting length ranges from 20cm to 34cm (7.8" to 13.4") depending on size, meaning the unfolded knit piece measures approximately 40cm to 68cm in length before the final fold. This technique creates a professional, reversible-quality finish with a neat interior.

Stitches and Gauge

The pattern utilizes standard knitting stitches appropriate for 4 ply yarn weight. The specified gauge is 28 stitches by 34 rounds over 10 centimeters, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. This gauge requirement ensures that the hat will fit properly across all five size options and that the fabric will have the intended drape and density. Knitters should always knit a gauge swatch before beginning the project to verify their personal gauge matches the pattern specifications, as variations in tension can significantly affect the final fit.

Yarn and Materials

Lottchen is designed to be knitted with fingering weight or sock yarn in 4 ply, a lightweight yarn category that creates a refined, closely-knit fabric ideal for hats. The 4 ply designation indicates the yarn is composed of four plies twisted together, providing good stitch definition and durability. The pattern samples were worked in Mominoki sock 4 ply yarn, demonstrating the quality and appearance achievable with this yarn weight. The lightweight nature of 4 ply yarn makes this hat suitable for transitional seasons or as a comfortable everyday hat that won't feel bulky, while the double-layer construction still provides adequate warmth.

Sizing and Finished Dimensions

The pattern provides five distinct size options with specific measurements:

  • XS: Head circumference up to 40cm (15.75"), finished hat length 20cm (7.8")
  • S: Head circumference 45cm (17.7"), finished hat length 23cm (9")
  • M: Head circumference 50cm (19.6"), finished hat length 27cm (10.6")
  • L: Head circumference 55cm (21.6"), finished hat length 32cm (12.6")
  • XL: Head circumference 55cm and above (21.6"+), finished hat length 34cm (13.4")

The pattern notes that these measurements refer to the finished hat after one layer has been folded inside. Knitters who prefer a shorter hat can easily customize the length by simply knitting fewer rounds before completing the pattern, making Lottchen adaptable to personal preference.

Pattern Format and Difficulty Level

Lottchen is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern, offering immediate access and the convenience of digital reference during knitting. The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, indicating it is suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. While the fundamental construction is straightforward, the double-layer method and the need to manage
