Lothlorien Hood by Sarahjanedesigns
What is Being Made
The Lothlorien Hood is a textured crochet hood designed by Sarahjanedesigns. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a structured hood garment that pulls over the head, offering three size options: Small (14" height, 13" depth), Medium (16" height, 14½" depth), and Large (18" height, 16" depth). The hood features a distinctive design that combines multiple crochet stitches to create visual texture and interest, with stripes and decorative button accents enhancing the finished piece.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level crochet project employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques to construct the hood. The pattern uses a combination of basic and textured stitches worked in rows to build the structure. Stripes are incorporated throughout the design by alternating between a main color and a contrast color, creating visual definition and pattern interest. Button placement is used as both a functional and decorative element, with five 1-inch buttons sewn onto the finished hood to add embellishment and design detail.
Stitches Used
- Chain – Used for foundation and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Single Crochet – A foundational stitch that creates a tight, dense fabric base
- Double Crochet – Provides medium height and drape to the hood structure
- Treble Crochet – Taller stitches used to create textured variation and visual interest
- Cross Stitches – Decorative stitches that add dimensional texture to the hood
- Slip Stitch – Used for joining rounds and finishing edges
Materials and Tools
The Lothlorien Hood pattern requires worsted or aran weight yarn in two colors. For the large size, you will need approximately 550 yards (500 meters) of yarn for the main color and 135 yards (120 meters) for the contrast color. A 6.5mm (size K/10½) crochet hook is recommended, though you may need to adjust hook size to achieve the correct gauge. The pattern specifies a gauge of 12 stitches and 12 rows over 4 inches when working single crochet fabric with the 6mm hook and worsted or aran weight yarn. Additional supplies include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and five 1-inch (2.5cm) buttons for finishing. This pattern is written in US crochet terminology.
