Lorna Mittens by The Lonely Sea
What is Being Made
The Lorna Mittens are a pair of warm, chunky adult mittens designed by Heather Corcoran of The Lonely Sea. This downloadable knitting pattern offers two size options: Adult (with a 19cm/7.5in palm circumference and 18cm/7in mitten length excluding the thumb and lower rib) and Large Adult (with a 20cm/8in palm circumference and 19cm/7.5in mitten length excluding the thumb and lower rib). These mittens are constructed as a complete hand covering with a separate thumb section, making them practical for cold weather wear.
Craft and Techniques
The Lorna Mittens are created using the knitting craft. This pattern is rated as Easy/Intermediate in difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle a straightforward garment project. The mittens are worked using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for chunky yarn construction.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch used throughout the Lorna Mittens is garter stitch. Garter stitch is created by knitting every row, resulting in a textured, ridged fabric with excellent elasticity and warmth—ideal properties for winter mittens. This simple yet effective stitch choice makes the pattern accessible while producing a durable, classic mitten construction.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for chunky or bulky weight yarn. The recommended yarn is King Cole Chunky Tweed in Colour Orkney 1076, which provides 138 metres (151 yards) per 100g ball. The actual yarn quantities required are:
- Adult size: 75g, 104m/114yds
- Large Adult size: 83g, 115m/126yds
Most chunky and bulky weight yarns work well with this pattern, though yarn amounts may vary depending on the specific yarn chosen. Knitters should always check their tension/gauge before beginning to ensure proper fit.
Needles and Notions: The pattern requires two sets of single point knitting needles:
- 5.5mm needles (UK size 5, USA size 9)
- 6.5mm needles (UK size 3, USA size 10.5)
Additionally, a tapestry needle or large sewing needle is needed to seam and finish the mittens.
Tension and Gauge
The pattern specifies a tension of 13.5 stitches and 27 rows to 10cm (4 inches) measured over garter stitch using 6.5mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper mitten sizing and fit. Knitters should adjust needle sizes if necessary to match the specified tension before beginning the main project.
