Loom Knit Scarf with Pockets by Denise Canela
What Is Being Made
This is a one-piece loom knit scarf with integrated pockets, designed by Denise M. Canela. The finished scarf measures approximately 10 x 90 inches (25.4 x 229 cm) before blocking, making it a generous-sized accessory piece. The unique construction method involves knitting a single flat piece that is then folded at the edges to create functional pockets, eliminating the need for separate assembly or seaming.
Loom and Tools Required
This pattern uses any loom with a minimum of 26 pegs, though the designer used a 36-peg loom for this project. Essential tools include a loom hook, stitch markers for tracking your progress, and a blunt yarn needle for weaving in ends and finishing.
Yarn and Materials
The scarf requires approximately 320 yards (10.2 oz. or 290 grams) of Chunky #5 weight yarn. The designer used Bernat Softee Baby Chunky for this project, which provides a soft, durable fabric suitable for a wearable accessory. The chunky yarn weight creates quick project completion and a substantial, cozy finished garment.
Stitches and Techniques
This intermediate-level project employs two primary stitches executed on the loom:
- Knit Stitch: The pattern uses two versions of the knit stitch. The flat version of the knit stitch is used for the cast-on row, while the eWrap version of the knit stitch is used throughout the remainder of the pattern for improved tension and consistency.
- Purl Stitch: Purl stitches are incorporated to create texture and stitch pattern variation.
- Double Rib Stitch: Rows 1-8 of the pocket sections feature a double rib stitch pattern, created by alternating knit 2, purl 2 across the row until the final two stitches, which are knitted. This creates vertical columns of texture ideal for pocket edges.
- Double Seed Stitch: Additional stitch pattern sections utilize a double seed stitch for varied texture throughout the scarf body.
Construction Method
The scarf is knit flat on the loom in a single continuous piece rather than as separate components. The cast-on begins by wrapping 26 pegs, then knitting the first row. The pocket sections are created through strategic stitch pattern placement and folding, meaning no additional sewing or attachment is required. This one-piece construction method simplifies the building process and ensures structural integrity.
Skill Level
Designated as Advanced Beginner difficulty, this pattern is appropriate for loom knitters who have mastered basic cast-on and knit techniques and are ready to explore stitch variations and more complex garment shaping. The video tutorial provided with the pattern should be watched completely before beginning the project to ensure understanding of the techniques involved.
