LongStuff Semicircular Knitted Shawl by JimiKnits
What is Being Made
LongStuff is a semicircular shawl, wrap, or scarf designed by JimiKnits as a downloadable knitting pattern. This versatile garment combines functionality with creative colorwork, allowing knitters to customize their finished piece through color selection and optional embellishments. The finished dimensions are 185cm wide by 55cm high (73" x 22"), making it a substantial wrap suitable for layering or wearing as a generous scarf.
Knitting Techniques
The shawl employs several key techniques to achieve its distinctive aesthetic. The primary construction method is bottom-up knitting, where the piece is worked from the base upward. The design features meandering short row stripes that build progressively as you work, creating visual interest and texture throughout the piece. This technique allows the striping pattern to develop organically across the shawl. An edging is picked up and knitted around the perimeter to create a neat, finished border that frames the main body of the shawl.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined with short row shaping to create the semicircular form and striped effect. The gauge is specified as 23 stitches by 48 rows (24 ridges) per 10cm (4"), which helps determine the final dimensions and yarn requirements. The meandering stripe pattern creates visual ridges and texture variations across the width of the shawl.
Yarn and Materials
LongStuff is designed to work with 2 or 3 colors of fingering weight yarn, with a total requirement of 2 to 3 skeins of 100g each (one of each color). The pattern sample shown uses Black and Variegated colorways in Brook Farm Yarns "Acero" 4ply. Suggested yarn options include Hedgehog Fibres Sock Merino (380 yards), Bijou Basin Ranch Yak Sport (325 yards), Old Maiden Aunt Merino/Cashmere 4ply (400 yards), and The Plucky Knitter Fingering Merino/Cashmerin (385 yards).
Needles required include 3.5mm (US 4) and 4.5mm (US 7) circular needles, each 80cm (32") or longer. Additional tools needed are 3 removable stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points.
Difficulty Level and Pattern Information
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic stockinette stitch. The pattern includes modification information and abbreviations help on page 5, as well as a blocking diagram to guide finishing. Knitters are encouraged to be creative with color choices and may optionally add pompoms or other embellishments to personalize their finished shawl.
