Product Description
When I first visited London last year, I loved the bright red phone booths that are sprinkled throughout the city. They are very popular with tourists, and many of them are actually working phone booths. A few have been turned into book exchanges - leave a used book inside and take another home to read.
For this year's trip to London, I made a scarf to look like a phone booth. Whether you love London or simply love red, this is a great pattern to spice up your winter wardrobe. Easy crochet instructions (including a color chart) to make this pattern in any length you like. Women’s scarf measures approximately 7.5” wide by 52” long (instructions are given to lengthen scarf if desired).

What is Being Made
The London Phone Booth Scarf is a women's crochet scarf designed by Lisa Ferrel. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished scarf measuring approximately 7.5 inches wide by 52 inches long, with instructions provided to lengthen the scarf if desired. The design incorporates the iconic British phone booth aesthetic through strategic color work, making it a charming accessory piece inspired by classic London imagery.
Yarn Materials
This project uses worsted weight yarn in three colors to achieve its distinctive London phone booth design:
- 4 oz. red yarn (primary color)
- 2.5 oz. white yarn (secondary color)
- Few yards yellow yarn (accent color for crown detail)
The total yardage and specific yarn brand are not detailed in the pattern, but the quantities provided give crafters a clear guideline for material purchasing.
Tools and Gauge
This pattern requires a size H (5.00 mm) crochet hook. The gauge is established at 7 double crochet stitches plus 2 inches over 4 rows measuring 2 inches, which helps ensure the scarf reaches its intended finished dimensions. A yarn needle is also needed for weaving in ends upon completion.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches Used
The London Phone Booth Scarf employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginner-level crafters, making it an accessible project for those new to crochet work.
- Chain stitch (ch): The foundation of the scarf begins with a chain of 25 stitches, establishing the width of the piece
- Single crochet (sc): Used throughout the pattern for structure and shaping, particularly in the first stitch of rows and in the crown detail
- Double crochet (dc): The primary stitch filling the body of the scarf, worked across rows to create the main fabric. The pattern uses a ch-2 (chain-2) as a turning chain that counts as the first double crochet of each row
- Decrease stitches (next 2 sts tog): Applied in the final rows (95-97) to shape the scarf's end, reducing stitch count from 24 double crochet stitches to 18 by the end of Row 97
- Slip stitch (sl st): Used in the crown section to join rounds together
- Color work: The pattern incorporates color changes throughout Rows 3-94 following a provided chart, allowing crafters to create the red and white phone booth striping effect
Pattern Structure
The scarf construction follows a straightforward row-by-row approach. Row 1 establishes the base with a chain foundation and double crochet stitches across. Row 2 introduces the turning chain and double crochet pattern that repeats. Rows 3 through 94 maintain this stitch pattern while alternating colors according to a chart, building the length and creating the phone booth design. Rows 95-97 shape the scarf's conclusion by decreasing stitches at the end of each row.
The pattern includes a crown detail worked in rounds using yellow or gold yarn, constructed with chain stitches, single crochet stitches, and slip stitch joins. This crown element adds dimensional interest to the finished scarf. Crafters desiring a longer scarf than the standard 52 inches can repeat Rows 7-14 until reaching their preferred length before moving to the final shaping rows.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it ideal for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with simple color changes and basic shaping techniques. The straightforward row-by-row construction and use of fundamental stitches ensure accessibility for newer crafters while still producing a visually striking finished accessory.
