Llanberis Stranded Colourwork Hat by Kath Andrews
What is Being Made
Llanberis is a cosy winter hat featuring stranded colourwork, designed by Kath Andrews. This downloadable knitting pattern is offered in three sizes, making it suitable for different head circumferences. The hat is ideal for winter walks and outdoor activities, combining both functionality and visual interest through its multi-colour design.
Craft and Technique
This is a knitting project worked primarily in the stranded colourwork technique, also known as fair isle knitting. Stranded colourwork involves knitting with multiple yarn colours in the same round, carrying the unused colours (strands) inside the fabric. This creates a double-layered, insulated fabric perfect for winter hats. The pattern is worked in the round using circular needles or double-pointed needles, which allows for seamless construction and maintains the continuity of the colourwork pattern.
The hat is constructed using a top-down or seamless approach, typical of modern hat design. Shaping is achieved through strategic decreases that taper the crown, creating a fitted silhouette. The tension and structure of stranded colourwork creates a naturally dense, warm fabric ideal for cold-weather wear.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K) – the primary stitch forming the fabric base
- Purl stitch (P) – used selectively in pattern instructions
- Slip 2 stitches together knitwise, knit 1, pass both slip stitches over (S2kp) – a centred double decrease used in crown shaping
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease
- Knit 2 together through back loop (k2tog tbl) – a left-leaning decrease variation
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease
- Stranded stocking stitch – the primary stitch pattern combining knit stitches with colour changes
Materials and Notions
Yarn: Rowan Moordale or other DK weight yarn is recommended. The pattern requires 25g (83 metres) each of three colours – designated as colours A, B, and C – for a total of 75g of yarn across all three colours. DK weight (also called light worsted) provides an ideal balance of warmth and breathability for a winter hat.
Needles: The pattern requires two sets of circular needles or double-pointed needles: 3.25mm needles (40cm circular or dpns) for the main fabric, and 3.75mm needles (40cm circular or dpns) for ribbing or cuff work. The smaller needles create tighter tension for the ribbed cuff, while the larger needles are used for the main colourwork section.
Additional Notions: Six to eight stitch markers are needed (depending on size), including one contrasting marker to denote the beginning of each round. A tapestry needle is required for weaving in yarn ends and any finishing work. A balloon is recommended for blocking, allowing the hat to be shaped and set to final dimensions.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the basic stitches are fundamental, stranded colourwork requires coordination of two colours per round and careful tension management to prevent puckering or loose floats. Knitters should be comfortable with circular needle techniques and reading pattern repeats before attempting this project.
Pattern Details
The Llanberis pattern is available in three sizes, allowing customisation for different wearers. Tension is crucial for proper fit: the pattern specifies 24.5 stitches and 27.5 rounds over 10 centimetres in stranded stocking stitch after gentle blocking. Knitters should swatch and block their tension sample before beginning to ensure the finished hat achieves the intended dimensions and drape.
The pattern uses abbreviated notation common to knitting instructions, with colour designations included where specific colours are required for particular rounds. Where only one set of instructions is provided, it applies to all three sizes, with size variations indicated separately.
