Product Description
Little Bits Swings and Roundabouts is a celebration of the return of seasonal events - specifically the re-emergence of a few floral friends. You should be comfortable with basic sock knitting construction, but the pattern is easy enough for the adventurous beginning sock knitter - if you are comfortable with basic lace and cables you'll be alright. The construction is cuff down combining a lace cuff with knit and purl ribbing where the knit columns have off-set cable sequences that taper off into the instep design. Intended to be a mid-calf sock in height it can easily be customized for shorter heights (how-to instructions included in the pattern notes).
Solid to semi-solid colorways will best display your handiwork. That said, this pattern was tested with a really nice multi-colored yarn with good results - just be aware you may lose pattern definition if your colorway is too variegated.

Little Bit Swings & Roundabouts Socks by Susan Woodley
What Is Being Made
Little Bit Swings & Roundabouts is an advanced knitted sock pattern inspired by garden botanicals. The design features mid-calf length socks with decorative cable and lace elements that draw inspiration from flowering plants, particularly grape muscari and bellflowers. The pattern celebrates the emergence of delicate flora and the intertwined growth patterns found in nature.
Design Inspiration and Details
Designer Susan Woodley created this pattern based on observations of her garden throughout the seasons. The socks incorporate botanical motifs that reference the natural world: small cable crosses evoke the entwined stems and leaves of climbing plants, while the lace cuff design echoes the delicate appearance of bellflowers emerging from clustered buds. This nature-inspired approach transforms functional legwear into wearable garden art.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The socks are constructed using a cuff-down method, beginning at the top and working downward toward the foot. This construction approach allows knitters to easily adjust the length and try on the socks as they progress. The pattern is written and charted for flexibility in needle choice, accommodating different knitting styles and preferences.
Needle Options
- One 40-inch or longer circular needle using the magic loop technique
- Two 24-inch circular needles for traditional small-circumference knitting
- Double-pointed needles (DPN) also suitable for construction
Stitches Used
The pattern employs cable stitches and lace stitches as primary decorative elements. The cable crosses create textured, three-dimensional details that mimic plant stems, while the lace sections feature openwork patterns that provide an airy, delicate aesthetic reminiscent of flower petals and botanical forms. Both techniques require intermediate to advanced knitting skills.
Materials
The pattern is shown knitted in Wollmeise Sockenwolle 80/20 Twin in the colorway Zarte Knopse. This yarn blend combines wool and synthetic fiber, offering durability and elasticity ideal for sock construction. The specific yarn choice demonstrates how color and texture can enhance the botanical theme of the design.
Difficulty Level
This is an advanced knitting pattern suitable for experienced knitters. The combination of cable work, lace patterning, and small-circumference knitting techniques requires solid foundational skills and comfort with reading both written and charted instructions.
