Lion Amigurumi by Natalia Kononenko

What is Being Made

This is a crochet amigurumi lion toy pattern designed by Natalia Kononenko. The lion is constructed as a single integrated piece, with the legs, body, and head crocheted continuously without requiring separate assembly and sewing. This streamlined construction method makes the project more accessible while maintaining the charming three-dimensional stuffed toy aesthetic characteristic of amigurumi designs.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project uses crochet as both the primary and only craft technique. The pattern is worked in continuous spiral construction, meaning rounds are not joined at the end but instead flow continuously from one round to the next. This technique creates a seamless, organic appearance and eliminates the need for joining stitches between rounds. A stitch marker or contrasting yarn is used to track the beginning of each round, though maintaining perfectly straight marker placement is not critical to the final result.

Stitches and Construction Methods

The pattern primarily utilizes single crochet (sc) stitches as the foundational stitch. Key construction techniques include:

  • Continuous spiral rounds: Rounds flow seamlessly without joining, creating smooth transitions between rows
  • Back Loop Only (BLO) stitching: In designated rows, stitches are worked through only the back loop of the previous row, creating textured ridges and definition
  • Front Loop Only (FLO) stitching: In designated rows, stitches are worked through only the front loop, used strategically for shaping and detail work
  • Standard loop stitching: Unless otherwise noted, stitches are worked under both loops of the previous row
  • Yarn color changes: Color transitions are made during the final step of the last single crochet of a round, ensuring clean color changes throughout the piece
  • Needle join fastening: The pattern is finished with a needle join method for secure completion

Materials

This pattern is worked with sport weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that creates a finely detailed finished toy. A crochet hook appropriate for sport weight yarn is required, though the specific hook size is detailed within the full pattern instructions. The toy is stuffed with fiberfill or similar toy stuffing material as the crocheting progresses, ensuring even distribution and proper shape.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the foundational techniques are based on single crochet, the continuous spiral construction, selective use of back loop and front loop stitching, and the challenge of maintaining consistent tension throughout a multi-part integrated piece require intermediate crochet experience and familiarity with amigurumi construction methods.
