Liam Baby Sweater by JustJussi

What Is Being Made

Liam is a downloadable knitting pattern for a baby sweater designed by Justine Turner. This garment is tailored for infants and toddlers in five size options: 0 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months. The actual chest measurements range from 40 cm (16 inches) for newborns to 53 cm (21 inches) for two-year-olds, making it a versatile pattern suitable for gifting across multiple age ranges within the first two years of life.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Liam sweater employs a combination of fundamental knitting techniques that make it accessible to beginner knitters. The body of the sweater is constructed using garter stitch, a textured stitch created by knitting every row, which produces a reversible fabric with horizontal ridges and excellent elasticity. This stitch choice is practical for baby garments as it lies flat and provides gentle stretch.

The yoke—the upper chest and shoulder section—transitions to stocking stitch, also known as stockinette stitch. This creates a smoother, more refined appearance in the fitted upper portion of the sweater. The combination of garter stitch body with stocking stitch yoke provides both visual interest and functional structure.

The design incorporates intarsia motifs, a colorwork technique where different colored yarns are used to create pictorial or geometric designs within the knitted fabric. Rather than carrying yarn across the back of the work, intarsia uses separate yarn bobbins for each color section, resulting in a single-thickness fabric with no floats on the reverse side—ideal for baby garments that require comfort against delicate skin.

Stitches and Abbreviations

The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations and fundamental stitches suitable for beginner crafters:

  • k - knit stitch, the basic forward stitch
  • p - purl stitch, the reverse of the knit stitch
  • k2tog - knit two stitches together, a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • inc/dec - increase and decrease stitches for garment shaping
  • pm - place marker, used to denote pattern sections or shaping points
  • cast off (bind off) - the finishing technique that secures stitches and completes edges

Yarn and Materials

The Liam sweater is designed for 4 ply yarn, also called fingering weight, which is a fine, lightweight yarn ideal for baby garments. This weight provides excellent stitch definition and drape while remaining breathable for sensitive infant skin.

Yarn quantities vary by size. The main color (MC) requires 330 meters (360 yards) for the smallest size, increasing to 660 meters (721 yards) for the largest 24-month size. The pattern incorporates multiple contrast colors—CC1, CC2, and CC3—for the intarsia motifs, though only small amounts of each contrast color are needed, making this an excellent pattern for using yarn scraps or small skeins.

The recommended needles are 3.25 mm (US size 3), though the pattern notes that needle size may be adjusted to achieve the correct gauge for proper fit. The pattern specifies that yarn is 4 ply wool, providing warmth and natural elasticity suitable for baby knitwear. Notions required are minimal, including stitch markers to aid in pattern tracking and shaping.

Difficulty Level

Classified as a beginner pattern, the Liam sweater introduces knitters to fundamental techniques including basic stitches, simple shaping through increases and decreases, and introductory colorwork through intarsia. The straightforward construction and use of common abbreviations make this an excellent first sweater project for those new to garment knitting.
