Lexie - 8ply/DK Block Stitch Bib and Washcloth by Jennifer Lee

What Is Being Made

The Lexie pattern provides instructions for creating a matching set of two items: a baby bib and a coordinating washcloth. Both pieces feature the same easy block stitch pattern, making them ideal for gifting as a coordinated pair or for creating multiple sets. The bib is designed to fit babies of any gender with practical dimensions, while the washcloth serves as a versatile kitchen or nursery cloth.

Project Specifications

Bib Dimensions: Approximately 16cm wide by 18cm long (6¼ inches by 7 inches), excluding the strap closure.

Washcloth Dimensions: Approximately 25cm by 25cm (10 inches by 10 inches).

Techniques and Stitches Used

This pattern is rated as Easy, making it suitable for beginner knitters. The primary stitch technique employed is the block stitch pattern, which creates a visually interesting texture through alternating blocks of knit and purl stitches. The block stitch is worked by alternating groups of 5 knit stitches with groups of 5 purl stitches across rows, creating a distinctive checkerboard-like appearance that is both decorative and functional.

The pattern incorporates fundamental knitting techniques including:

  • Casting on stitches to establish the foundation
  • Knit stitch (K) for raised texture areas
  • Purl stitch (P) for recessed texture areas
  • Yarn over (yrn) for creating decorative openings or buttonholes
  • Decreasing stitches together (tog) for shaping
  • Continuing stitch patterns across multiple rows
  • Sewing in ends with a wool needle for finishing

Materials Required

Yarn: 2 balls of Lincraft Cotton 8ply yarn in 50g balls (approximately 100m per ball). The 8ply/DK weight provides a medium thickness suitable for creating fabric with good drape and durability. Cotton yarn is ideal for bibs and washcloths due to its absorbency and easy care properties. Note that yarn quantities may vary depending on individual knitting tension and specific yarn characteristics.

Needles: A pair of 4.00mm knitting needles (UK size 8, US size 6). These needles are sized to work with the 8ply/DK yarn weight to achieve the correct tension.

Additional Supplies: A wool needle for sewing in yarn ends after completion, and one button for the bib closure.

Tension and Gauge

The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm (4 inches) measured over the block stitch pattern using 4.00mm needles. Achieving correct tension is important for ensuring the finished pieces match the intended dimensions and drape properly.

Pattern Design Details

The block stitch pattern is initiated by casting on 35 stitches for the bib. The pattern begins with a foundation row of knit 5, purl 5 stitches repeated across, establishing the block structure. This simple repeat makes the pattern easy to memorize and work, ideal for beginner knitters who are building their skills. The alternating blocks of knit and purl stitches create texture that adds visual interest while remaining straightforward to execute.

The bib includes a strap closure secured with a button, providing a practical fastening method for securing the bib around a baby's neck. The washcloth is worked as a simple rectangular piece without closures, making it quick to complete.

Suitability and Skill Level

Rated as an Easy pattern, Lexie is well-suited for beginner knitters who have mastered basic cast-on and stitch techniques. The straightforward block stitch repeat requires minimal pattern reading skills, and the simple rectangular shapes of both the bib and washcloth eliminate complex shaping or decreasing techniques. The pattern uses clear abbreviations and straightforward instructions, making it accessible to those new to knitting.
