Product Description
I have 5 - FIVE! - babies to knit for in 2013, so I wanted something that was pretty but not too difficult to knit, so I used knits and purls to create a textured lattice-like pattern.
The Lettuce Lattice Baby Blanket pattern is perfect for swaddling newborns, makes a great receiving blanket, and is sure to be a great companion blankie during the toddler years. Knit with superwash yarn, parents will appreciate this thoughtful and easy-care gift. Pattern includes stitch chart and instructions on working with hand-dyed yarns.

Lettuce Lattice Baby Blanket by Stefanie Goodwin Ritter
What is Being Made
The Lettuce Lattice Baby Blanket is a knitted throw designed by Stefanie Goodwin Ritter, measuring approximately 38.5" x 25" when blocked to finished measurements. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a decorative baby blanket featuring a lattice pattern that showcases the beautiful hand-dyed colorway of the yarn while maintaining a practical size suitable for infants and nurseries.
Knitting Techniques
This blanket employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to achieve its finished design. The project begins with a crochet cast-on, which the designer recommends for its advantages over the long-tail method—eliminating the need to estimate yarn length and creating an edge that closely matches the bound-off edge for visual consistency. The blanket features garter stitch borders on all sides, created by knitting 6 rows at the beginning and maintaining 6 stitches in garter stitch on both the first and last stitches of every row throughout the project. This border technique frames the central lattice pattern and provides structural stability. The main design is worked from a chart, requiring the knitter to read and follow a visual pattern guide. Marker placement and slipping markers as you work helps maintain pattern accuracy across the blanket's width. The designer also recommends alternating between skeins every few rows when working with hand-dyed yarns, a technique that ensures even color distribution and prevents pooling or uneven color saturation across the finished piece.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K) — the fundamental stitch used throughout the garter stitch borders and as directed by the pattern chart
- Garter stitch — created by knitting every row, used for the 6-row cast-on border and the 6-stitch borders on each side of the blanket
- Lattice stitch pattern — the central design element worked from the provided chart, creating the decorative lattice effect that gives the blanket its name
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Lettuce Lattice Baby Blanket is constructed using 3 skeins of Malabrigo Rios yarn in the Lettuce colorway. Malabrigo Rios is a 100% Superwash Merino wool, offering softness and easy care—ideal for baby blankets. Each skein contains 210 yards (192 meters) and weighs 100 grams, providing a total yardage of approximately 630 yards for the completed project. The yarn is classified as worsted weight, a medium weight that works up relatively quickly while maintaining good stitch definition for pattern visibility. The project calls for US #8 circular needles, which accommodate the width of the blanket comfortably. A darning needle is required for weaving in ends upon completion. The gauge is 20 stitches and 16 rows over 4 inches in pattern stitch, which knitters should verify before beginning to ensure proper finished measurements and blanket proportions.
