Product Description
Hand-designed letter E dishcloth pattern. All of my patterns are free-drawn and converted to a pattern on knitting graph paper. I never use knitting pattern creation software to design my patterns. One skein of sugar n cream yarn on size 4 (US) needles is used to create each dishcloth.
Letter E Dishcloth by Nikki's Needles
Project Overview
The Letter E Dishcloth is an original knitting pattern designed by Nikki's Needles, created in 2018. This project combines functional dishcloth construction with decorative lettering, making it an ideal choice for crafters seeking to add personalized monograms or alphabet designs to their kitchen textiles. The finished piece measures approximately 7.5 inches by 9 inches, providing a practical size suitable for everyday kitchen use.
Craft and Technique
This pattern is executed entirely through knitting, making it accessible to beginners while introducing charted pattern work. The design employs a straightforward construction method that builds the letter form directly into the fabric through a combination of stockinette stitch and chart-based patterning. The letter is created using a central 30-stitch section worked from a pattern chart, flanked by 5-stitch borders on each side to frame the design and provide structural stability.
Stitches and Construction Details
The Letter E Dishcloth utilizes fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginner-level crafters:
- Knit stitch (K) – the primary stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl stitch (P) – used in combination with knit stitches
- Stockinette stitch – the main stitch pattern, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing the characteristic smooth, V-textured surface
The pattern begins with casting on 40 stitches. The first five rows establish a stockinette stitch border across the entire width. Starting at row 6, the central 30 stitches transition to follow a pattern chart while the outer 5 stitches on each side continue in stockinette stitch throughout, creating a framed effect. This border technique prevents curling and adds definition to the letter design. The pattern continues for 45 rows total, with the charted letter section occupying rows 6 through 45.
Materials Required
This dishcloth pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, specifically Sugar 'N Cream cotton yarn. One skein provides sufficient yardage to complete the entire project. Cotton yarn is an excellent choice for dishcloths due to its absorbency, durability, and easy-care properties. Knitting needles in US size 4 (3.5mm) are required to achieve the appropriate gauge and fabric density for this beginner-friendly pattern.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner pattern, the Letter E Dishcloth is designed for knitters new to the craft or those building fundamental skills. The straightforward stitch vocabulary, simple shaping, and introduction to basic chart reading make this an excellent project for developing confidence in following written instructions and working with charted patterns.
