Leigh - 8ply Textured Bib and Cloth Set by Jennifer Lee

What Is Being Made

The Leigh pattern is a coordinating set consisting of two pieces: a textured bib and a matching cloth. Both items are designed to work together as a cohesive set, making them ideal for gifting or creating a coordinated nursery accessory collection. The bib features a strap closure with button fastening, while the cloth serves as a practical dishcloth or burp cloth. This design is suitable for either a baby girl or boy, offering neutral appeal for any nursery.

Sizes and Finished Dimensions

The bib measures approximately 16cm (6¼ inches) in width and 18cm (7 inches) in length, excluding the strap. The cloth is a square piece measuring 22cm (8¾ inches) in both width and length, providing a generous size for practical use.

Techniques and Stitch Construction

The Leigh set employs straightforward knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The main body of both pieces features an easy knit and purl textured stitch that creates visual interest while remaining accessible to newer knitters. A garter stitch border frames both pieces, providing a neat, finished edge and adding structural stability. Garter stitch, created by knitting every row, offers a classic, reversible texture that complements the central textured pattern.

The construction method involves working flat on straight needles, building the pieces row by row from the cast-on edge. The textured stitch pattern alternates knit and purl stitches to create dimension without requiring complex colorwork or advanced shaping techniques.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (K): The fundamental stitch forming the foundation of both pieces
  • Purl stitch (P): Used in alternation with knit stitches to create the textured surface
  • Garter stitch: Knitting every row to create the border frame on both the bib and cloth
  • Yarn forward (yfwd): Used for creating decorative elements or shaping
  • Increase (inc) and decrease (dec): Shaping techniques employed as needed for the bib construction

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern requires 2 balls of Lincraft Cotton 8ply yarn in 50g balls, each ball containing approximately 100 meters of yardage. The 8ply weight (also known as DK or light worsted weight) provides a balanced thickness that works quickly while maintaining stitch definition. Cotton yarn is an excellent choice for bibs and cloths, offering breathability, washability, and durability for items that will require frequent laundering.

The pattern notes that quantities may vary between individual knitters and different yarn types, so crafters should monitor their yardage consumption as they work. A pair of 4.00mm knitting needles (UK size 8, US size 6) is required for working the pieces to the specified tension. A wool needle for sewing in yarn ends is also needed to finish the set professionally.

Additional Materials

One button is required for the bib closure, allowing the strap to fasten securely around a baby's neck.

Tension and Gauge

The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10cm (4 inches) measured over stocking stitch using 4.00mm needles. Achieving correct tension is essential for the finished pieces to match the intended dimensions and drape properly.

Skill Level

Rated as a beginner pattern, the Leigh set is designed for knitters new to the craft or those seeking a quick, confidence-building project. The combination of basic stitches, straightforward construction, and small finished sizes makes this an ideal first project or a quick gift to make for multiple recipients.
