Product Description
Laura Cowl is for my oldest daughter. She’s already a teenager, claiming to be adult, and refusing to wear childish colors like pink or purple. She needed something that shows that II take her seriously, so I made her a gray cowl. To compensate the serious color I decided to use some luxurious yarn with cashmere and silk content - she already knows how to take care of such a garment.
The cowl is textured, the different sections give it a lively rhythm. It knits up quickly and due to the pattern changes you won’t get bored.
**YARN USED IN SAMPLE: **Lana Gatto Feeling 153 yds (140 m) / 50 g, 70 % wool, 20% silk, 10% cashmere, colorway: dove gray, 230 yards 210 m (a substitute is shown below).
**SIZE: **4 3/4” 12 wide and 47 1/4” 120 cm long. Please note, that the width is not the same for the whole loope because of the different patterns.I give tips for adjusting the pattern.
**GAUGE: **25 sts x 28 rows = 4 x 4” 10 x 10 cm in pattern from Chart C.Please note that in this particular project getting the right gauge is not essential. However, working with different yarnweight / gauge will effect both the yardage and the final size of the project as well.
Laura Cowl by Zsuzsa Kiss
What is Being Made
The Laura Cowl is a knitted cowl designed by Zsuzsa Kiss. This is a loop-style neckwear piece measuring approximately 4 3/4 inches [12 cm] wide and 47 1/4 inches [120 cm] long when worked in the recommended yarn. The cowl features a variable width due to different stitch patterns incorporated throughout the design, creating visual interest and textural variation.
Techniques and Stitches
This advanced-level knitting project employs charted stitch patterns to create its distinctive look. The pattern includes Chart C, which serves as the primary gauge reference and pattern guide. The design incorporates square pattern repeats that can be strategically manipulated to customize the finished piece. Knitters work from these charts to execute the various stitch patterns that define the cowl's appearance.
The pattern allows for customization through two primary adjustments: widening the cowl by knitting additional repeats of the square pattern at the edges, and adjusting length by knitting more or fewer pattern repeats. This modular approach makes the design flexible while maintaining its structural integrity.
Yarn and Materials
The Laura Cowl is designed for sport weight yarn with high wool content. The recommended yarn is Lana Gatto Feeling, which contains 70% wool, 20% silk, and 10% cashmere. This yarn provides 153 yards (140 meters) per 50-gram skein. The blend creates a luxurious fabric with warmth, drape, and subtle sheen.
While the pattern specifies DK weight yarn as an alternative option, knitters should note that using different yarn weights or gauges will affect both the yardage required and the final dimensions of the finished cowl. The designer notes that achieving exact gauge is not essential for this particular project, offering flexibility for yarn substitution.
Needles and Notions
- US 6 [4 mm] circular needle, 24 inches [60 cm] long
- Tapestry needle for finishing
- Stitch markers
- Cable needle
Difficulty Level
The Laura Cowl is rated as an advanced knitting project, suitable for experienced knitters. The charted stitch patterns and the need to manage pattern repeats require solid foundational skills and comfort reading knitting charts.
Gauge
The recommended gauge is 25 stitches by 28 rows equals 4 by 4 inches [10 by 10 cm] when measured over the pattern from Chart C. As noted in the pattern, while achieving this exact gauge is not critical, variations in gauge will impact both the yardage needed and the final size of the cowl.
