Product Description
This circularly knitted project is the result of Beth's classes in Latvian mitten techniques. The methods used in the cuff can be applied to sleeve cuffs, sock tops and more!: a scalloped cuff, the herringbone braid, many subtle and beautiful variations of the half-braid, and a picot edged hem. A choice of two- or three-color traditional motifs is incorporated in the main part of the fingerless mitt as well as the gussetless thumb. Additional techniques to be discussed include knitting with two yarns in the right hand, two yarns in the left hand, or a yarn in each hand, as well as knitting with three colors and setting up the knitting for color changes in the braids. Includes photos and charts. First published in Knitting Traditions Winter 2011 as “A Kaleidoscope of Color: Latvian Fingerless Mitts"

Latvian Fingerless Mitts by Beth Brown-Reinsel
Project Overview
The Latvian Fingerless Mitts are a circularly knitted intermediate-level project designed by Beth Brown-Reinsel. These fingerless mitts showcase traditional Latvian mitten techniques in a modern, practical format. The design is worked in the round and features an open hand construction, making it ideal for crafters looking to develop their skills in colorwork and traditional mitten-making methods.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a pair of fingerless mitts—hand coverings that leave the fingers exposed while providing warmth to the wrists and back of the hand. The mitts are designed with an open hand area and include a thumb hole, making them functional for activities requiring finger dexterity. The finished garments can be worn as standalone accessories or paired with gloves for additional warmth.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Latvian Fingerless Mitts employ several traditional and contemporary knitting techniques:
- Circular knitting: The entire project is worked in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and creating seamless, professional-looking results.
- Latvian mitten techniques: The cuff construction draws from authentic Latvian mitten methods, with techniques that can be adapted for sleeve cuffs and sock tops as well.
- Multicolor colorwork: The main hand section allows knitters to practice working with two, three, or four colors in a single round, building confidence in stranded colorwork techniques.
- Picot hem finishing: The open hand is finished with a picot hem, a decorative edge technique seen in some traditional Latvian mitten cuffs, adding an elegant detail to the final garment.
- Afterthought thumb method: The thumb hole is created using the classic "Afterthought" technique traditional to Latvian mittens, allowing for a custom fit and seamless integration into the hand section.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, the pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches worked in circular construction. The colorwork sections utilize stranded knitting techniques to incorporate multiple yarn colors within rounds. The picot hem edge is created through a combination of knit stitches and yarn overs, a classic finishing technique in traditional mitten design.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Latvian Fingerless Mitts are designed to be worked in sport-weight yarn, though the pattern notes that worsted-weight yarn can also be used. The recommended yarn is Brown Sheep Nature Spun, a 100% wool option that provides durability and elasticity ideal for fitted hand garments.
Yarn colors specified in the pattern include:
- #200 Bordeaux (main color)
- #307 Lullaby in yellow (contrast color 1)
- #N24 Evergreen (contrast color 2)
- #117S Winter Blue (contrast color 3)
- #N17 French Clay (contrast color 4)
The pattern requires one-half to one full skein each of the selected colors, depending on the final size and colorwork complexity chosen. Knitters have the flexibility to select their own color combinations while maintaining the traditional Latvian aesthetic.
Needles and Tools
The pattern is worked on a set of four US-size needles, appropriate for circular knitting in the round. The specific needle size is referenced in the full pattern instructions and should be selected based on gauge requirements to achieve the proper fit for the hand circumference.
Cast-On Method
The Latvian Fingerless Mitts use the Slingshot or Longtail cast-on method with short tails, a traditional approach that creates a neat, elastic edge suitable for fitted cuff construction. Video tutorials are referenced in the pattern for both Continental and English knitting styles, making the cast-on accessible to knitters of various backgrounds.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Latvian Fingerless Mitts are suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting and basic colorwork. The pattern provides an excellent opportunity to develop proficiency in Latvian mitten techniques while creating a wearable, practical accessory.
