Product Description
This bag is perfect to carry as a project bag, to the beach or to use a classic market bag. The lace pattern is rhythmic to work up and you will have a new bag in a breeze.
Bag is worked in the round, from the bottom-up. You will begin on DPNs and switch to circular needles when it is large enough.
Lace pattern is worked over beginning stitch marker. You will remove it when you get to the end of indicated rounds, complete stitches in the pattern and then replace marker.
Straps are picked up on one side then grafted to the other using the Kitchener Stitch.
Bag includes a drawstring closure.
Lattice Carryall by Stephanie Anderson
What Is Being Made
The Lattice Carryall is an intermediate-level knitted bag designed by Stephanie Anderson. This project creates a functional carryall with finished dimensions of 16 inches wide by 18 inches in length (measured from cast on to cast off), making it a practical everyday bag suitable for carrying essentials.
Construction Method and Technique
The Lattice Carryall is worked in the round from the bottom-up, a construction technique that creates a seamless cylindrical form ideal for bags and other tubular garments. This method eliminates the need for seaming and provides a polished, professional finish. The pattern utilizes circular knitting needles as the primary tool, with double-pointed needles (DPNs) incorporated for specific sections of the construction.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern features stockinette stitch as the primary stitch structure. Stockinette stitch creates a smooth, classic fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns on the right side, providing an elegant canvas for the lattice design element that gives the carryall its distinctive name and visual appeal.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Lattice Carryall is designed to use worsted weight yarn (also classified as weight 4). The pattern calls for approximately 560 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn. The suggested yarn is Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, which comes in 186-yard balls at 3.5 ounces (100 grams) per ball, requiring 3 balls to complete the project. Alternative cotton worsted weight yarns of similar yardage and weight specifications can be substituted.
Tools and Notions
- US 7 (4.5 mm) circular knitting needles measuring 24 inches (60 cm), 29 inches (75 cm), or longer
- 5 US 7 (4.5 mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working smaller circumferences
- Stitch marker for tracking round progression
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Scrap yarn for provisional cast-on or stitch holders
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches by 26 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch when measured without blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the finished dimensions of 16 inches wide by 18 inches in length. The bag's circumference accommodates a 24-inch circular needle, with longer options available for comfort during knitting.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the Lattice Carryall is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting and stitch pattern work. The intermediate classification indicates that knitters should be comfortable with working in the round, reading pattern instructions, and managing stitches across multiple needles.
