Lake George Cable Lace Shawl by Linda Lehman

Project Overview

The Lake George Cable Lace Shawl is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Linda Lehman for Wearable Art Emporium. This ornate shawl combines cable and lace techniques in a single stitch construction, creating a visually striking wearable piece. The pattern is ideal for knitters with solid cabling experience who want to create a sophisticated, show-stopping accessory.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a cable lace shawl featuring intricate cable work as the primary design element. The shawl showcases ornate cables worked throughout, making it a statement piece for those who enjoy detailed cable knitting. The finished garment includes a crocheted edging that frames the main knitted body, adding a polished finishing touch to the design.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Cable knitting – The primary technique throughout the shawl, requiring knitters to have a good working knowledge of cabling methods
  • Lace knitting – Integrated with the cable work to create the cable lace stitch pattern
  • Chart reading – The pattern uses stitch charts; the designer recommends enlarging charts to improve readability and knitting enjoyment
  • Blocking – Moderate blocking is part of the finishing process to achieve proper gauge and appearance
  • Crochet edging – A crocheted border completes the shawl after the main knitted section is finished

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

Cable Lace Stitch is the foundation of this shawl. The pattern combines cable stitches with lace elements to create the ornate, decorative design. Knitters should be comfortable with cable techniques before beginning this intermediate project.

Materials Required

For the main shawl body:

  • Yarn: 1200 to 1475 yards of sport weight yarn
  • Needles: U.S. Size #5 (3.75mm) knitting needles
  • Notions: Row counters (optional but recommended) and stitch markers (optional but recommended)

For the edging:

  • Yarn: Approximately 100 yards of the same or matching sport weight yarn
  • Hooks: Size H and I crochet hooks (adjust hook size if your crochet tension is particularly tight or loose)

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to approximately 5 stitches per inch in cable lace stitch with moderate blocking. While gauge is not critical for this shawl, variations in gauge will affect the finished size and alter yarn requirements. Knitters who do not achieve the specified gauge should expect their finished shawl dimensions to differ from the intended design.

Skill Level and Difficulty

This pattern is rated as intermediate and assumes knitters have a solid, working knowledge of cable techniques before beginning. The combination of cables and lace, along with chart reading and blocking requirements, makes this suitable for experienced knitters rather than beginners.
