Product Description
This very pretty design uses raised narrow bands of reverse stocking stitch with alternating eyelets. This makes a flattering, easy to wear sweater. A scoop neck with rouleau effect ridges compliments the design by mirroring the main pattern, but without the eyelets.

Laila DK Knit Sweater by Pat Menchini
What is Being Made
Laila is a knitted sweater designed by Pat Menchini, available in six size options to fit bust measurements from 76-81 cm (30-32 inches) up to 117-122 cm (46-48 inches). The finished garment features an actual bust circumference ranging from 95 cm (37½ inches) in the smallest size to 150 cm (59¼ inches) in the largest size. The sweater is designed with a length to shoulder shaping of approximately 58-62 cm (23-24½ inches) depending on size, and includes short sleeves measuring approximately 27 cm (10½ inches) across all sizes.
Craft and Techniques
This is an intermediate-level knitting project that uses fundamental knitting construction methods. The pattern employs standard garment shaping techniques including shoulder shaping and sleeve cap shaping. Knitters will work with a stitch holder during construction, indicating the pattern involves techniques such as placing stitches on hold for later grafting or binding off, commonly used when joining shoulder seams or creating neckline openings.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used throughout Laila is stockinette stitch (st st), which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric with a flat appearance and consistent drape. This fundamental stitch is worked over the body and sleeves of the sweater, providing a clean canvas that allows the yarn color and texture to be the focal point of the design.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Laila is knitted using King Cole Paradise Beaches DK yarn in the shade Blue Jamaica 3005. This yarn weight is DK (double knitting), a versatile medium weight suitable for garments with good structure and drape. The yarn provides 255 metres (278 yards) per 100g ball. Yarn requirements vary by size: sizes 76-81, 86-91, and 97-102 cm bust require 5 balls each, while sizes 107-112, 117-122, and larger require 6 balls each of the 100g weight.
The pattern calls for two pairs of knitting needles: 3.25 mm needles (UK size 10, US size 3) and 4 mm needles (UK size 8, US size 6). The smaller needles are typically used for ribbing or edgings, while the larger 4 mm needles are used for the main body and sleeves worked in stockinette stitch. One stitch holder is required for holding stitches during construction.
Tension and Gauge
The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) when working stockinette stitch on 4 mm needles. Achieving correct tension is critical to the fit of the finished garment. Knitters are advised to test their tension before beginning the project; if the tension is too loose, a finer needle should be used, and if too tight, a larger needle should be substituted. Yarn substitution is possible if the original King Cole Paradise Beaches DK becomes unavailable, provided the replacement yarn matches the stated tension.
