Ladies Scarf in SMC Select Reflect – Pattern 1902 A/B: Two Colorway Lace Shawl

This free downloadable knitting pattern from Schachenmayr (design reference 1902 A/B) guides you through creating a beautifully delicate ladies lace shawl, offered in two distinct colorway versions. Known in the original German as a Spitzentuch (lace shawl or lace scarf), this elegant accessory is worked from the top down, growing outward as stitches are increased, and finished with a decorative crochet cast-off edge. The pattern is suitable for knitters with some experience in reading charted lace patterns and working yarn-overs and decreases.

Two Design Variations: Model A and Model B

The pattern presents two versions of the same shawl silhouette, differentiated by size and yarn colorway. Instructions for Model A appear before the brackets, while instructions for Model B appear within the brackets, allowing both versions to be followed from a single set of charts and directions.

Materials Required

Yarn: SMC Select Reflect

SMC Select Reflect by Schachenmayr is a DK weight yarn with a luxurious fibre blend of 52% viscose and 48% cotton, giving the finished shawl a beautiful drape and a subtle sheen. The yarn has a running length of approximately 120 metres per 50 g skein, making it well suited to delicate lace work where stitch definition and a fluid hand are important. The viscose content contributes a gentle lustre that enhances the openwork lace sections, while the cotton provides breathability and structure.

Needles and Hook

  • Circular knitting needle: Milward circular needle, size 4½–5 mm, any length (the circular needle accommodates the large stitch count as the shawl grows)
  • Crochet hook: Milward crochet hook, size 4.5 mm, used for the decorative cast-off along the lower edge

Construction Method

The shawl is worked from the top down, beginning with a cast-on of just 9 stitches worked loosely. This top-down construction is a classic approach for triangular or semi-circular shawls, allowing the knitter to see the piece grow naturally and adjust length if desired. Increases are worked consistently on every right-side (RS) row throughout the beginning section, adding 8 stitches per RS row following the charted beginning pattern, until the required stitch count is reached.
