Product Description

These pretty crocheted fingerless mitts feature a feminine lace cuff making them both stylish and practical.

Instructions are written for one size (Ladies size S/M), but the post stitches allow for lots of stretch. The finished mitt is 6.5" in circumference but they stretch to fit 7.5" and they are 7" long.

This crochet pattern calls for a 3.25 mm (D) crochet hook (or size needed to obtain gauge), and 1½ balls of Drops® Alpaca. Please note that Drops® Alpaca is considered a sport weight (2) but, it works up like a fingering weight (1) so Berroco® Ultra Alpaca Fine makes for an excellent substitute yarn. The pattern includes detailed instructions, colour illustrations and a chart to help you with the lacy cuff section of the pattern.

The mitt is worked in the round from the bottom up. The thumb is constructed separately and then sewn on. Skills and techniques used are: sc, hdc, dc, front and back post stitches, and working in the back hump of the starting chain.

Project Overview

The Lacy Llama Fingerless Mitts are an intermediate-level crochet project designed to create elegant, open-work hand coverings. These fingerless mitts combine delicate lacework with structured post stitches, making them suitable for crafters with foundational crochet skills who are ready to explore textured stitch techniques.

What Is Being Made

Fingerless mitts are hand accessories that cover the palm and back of the hand while leaving the fingers exposed. This design allows for warmth and style without sacrificing dexterity, making them practical for activities requiring hand mobility. The "Lacy Llama" name reflects both the delicate, open aesthetic of the design and the luxurious fiber content.

Materials Used

These mitts are crafted using Drops® Alpaca by Garnstudio, a premium yarn made from 100% alpaca fiber. Each skein contains 50 grams (1.76 ounces) and yields 166 meters (182 yards) of yarn. The yarn weight is classified as 4-ply and sport weight, making it ideal for creating delicate, drape-friendly garments with excellent stitch definition. Alpaca fiber is prized for its softness, warmth, and lustrous appearance, making it an excellent choice for visible lacework where fiber quality enhances the final aesthetic.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

The Lacy Llama Fingerless Mitts employ several essential crochet techniques to achieve their distinctive appearance:

  • Foundation Stitches: The pattern uses chain (ch) stitches to create the foundation and openings throughout the design.
  • Basic Stitches: Single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), and double crochet (dc) form the structural base of the mitts.
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): Used to join rounds and transition between sections seamlessly.
  • Post Stitches: The pattern features front post double crochet (fpdc) and back post double crochet (bpdc) stitches, which create textured, three-dimensional ribbing by working around the post of previous stitches rather than into the top loops. These stitches are worked by inserting the hook from front to back (or back to front) around the stitch post, pulling up a loop, and completing the double crochet in two stages.
  • Decrease Techniques: The pattern includes front post double crochet 2 together (fpdc2tog), a specialized decrease that combines two front post double crochets into a single stitch, allowing for shaping and fitted construction.
  • Yarn Over (YO): A fundamental technique used throughout to create loops and control stitch height.

Gauge and Sizing

The recommended gauge for this project is 11 single crochet stitches and 16 rows measuring 5 centimeters (2 inches) when measured on unblocked fabric. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the mitts fit correctly and display the lace pattern as intended. Crocheters should swatch before beginning the full project to verify their personal gauge matches the pattern specifications.

Difficulty Level

Classified as intermediate difficulty, the Lacy Llama Fingerless Mitts require familiarity with basic crochet stitches and comfort working with post stitches, which add textural complexity. The combination of lacework and post stitch ribbing makes this an excellent project for advancing beyond beginner techniques while remaining achievable for dedicated crafters.
