Lace Cuff Baby Socks by Terry Liann Morris

What is Being Made

These are delicate baby socks designed for infants aged 0 to 6 months, featuring a distinctive construction that combines practical ribbing with decorative lace detailing. The socks are characterized by a folded lacy cuff that sits at the ankle, providing both visual appeal and functional stretch to keep the socks securely in place on small feet.

Techniques Used

The pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques to achieve its finished design. Circular knitting is used to construct the socks seamlessly in the round using double pointed needles. The pattern incorporates a German Twisted Cast On method, which is recommended for creating a loose, elastic foundation edge that will fold neatly for the cuff. Lace patterning is introduced using a chart-based design that creates the decorative openwork visible in the folded cuff section. The ribbing provides stretch and recovery, ensuring the socks stay snug around baby ankles without binding.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

The pattern utilizes essential knitting stitches and shaping techniques:

  • Knit stitch (k) – the foundational stitch forming the main fabric
  • Purl stitch (p) – used for ribbing and textural variation
  • Yarn over (yo) – creates the openwork eyelets characteristic of lace patterns
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used to balance yarn overs in lace
  • Purl 2 together (ptog) – a decrease worked on purl rows
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease for shaping and lace pattern symmetry

The pattern begins with a purl round after casting on, which creates the fold line for the cuff. Lace patterning is then introduced using a chart, combining yarn overs with decreases to form the characteristic holes and texture of lace fabric.

Materials and Tools

The socks are knit using sock or fingering weight yarn, which provides the delicate fabric appropriate for baby garments. The sample shown was knit in Lisa Souza Sock! yarn in two colorways: undyed natural and South Pacific. Only small amounts of yarn are required for this project, making it an economical choice for using yarn stash.

Two sets of US double pointed needles are needed: US Size 1 (2.25mm) needles for the main sock construction, and US Size 2 (2.75mm) needles for the initial cast on. Using slightly larger needles for casting on helps create a loose, elastic edge that will fold properly for the cuff. The pattern is designed to achieve a gauge of 8.5 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch, which is typical for sock-weight yarn and creates a fabric dense enough for durability while remaining soft for sensitive baby skin.
