Inspired by the mystery and drama of a 16th century Masquerade Ball, La Mascarada combines mosaic and lace techniques to create a beautiful and elegant yoke panel. The sweater is worked seamlessly and in the round from the top down. Short rows are added to shape the neckline and from then the mosaic pattern is introduced followed by the lace design. The sleeves and body are separated and worked top to bottom. The cuff is worked in the same mosaic pattern as the yoke.
The Mosaic and Lace designs are straightforward, with written and charted instructions provided for the Lace design. You only knit with one colour at a time. There is a link to a YouTube video tutorial for Rnds 3, 4 and 6 of the Mosaic design.
The body and sleeves can be any length and the instructions show where the length can be added.
Sizes - Women’s XS (S, M, L, XL, 2XL)(3XL, 4XL, 5XL, 6XL, 7XL, 8XL).
This sweater is intended to be worn with 1cm/1/3” positive ease.
La Mascarada is a seamlessly constructed women's sweater designed by Catherine Rein and published by The Cable & Lace Co. This elegant garment features an intricate yoke panel inspired by the mystery and drama of 16th century Masquerade Balls. The sweater is available in sizes ranging from Women's XS through 8XL, making it accessible to a wide range of body types. The design combines decorative mosaic and lace techniques to create a striking visual focal point at the yoke, while the body and sleeves offer customizable length options for personalized fit.
La Mascarada is worked seamlessly and in the round from the top down, a construction method that minimizes seaming and creates a polished, professional finish. The pattern begins with short rows to shape the neckline, establishing the proper fit around the neck opening. Once the neckline shaping is complete, the mosaic pattern is introduced across the yoke panel. Following the mosaic work, the lace design is added to complete the decorative yoke section. After the yoke is finished, the sleeves and body are separated and worked individually from top to bottom, allowing for independent length adjustments. The cuffs are finished using the same mosaic pattern as the yoke, creating visual cohesion throughout the design.
This intermediate-level pattern employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its sophisticated appearance:
The pattern provides comprehensive support for knitters working through the mosaic design, including a linked YouTube video tutorial covering Rounds 3, 4, and 6 of the mosaic pattern. This video support makes the intermediate-level techniques more accessible to knitters building their skills.
La Mascarada is designed to be worked in sport weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that creates drape and elegance in the finished garment. The pattern is formatted as a downloadable PDF, providing immediate access to complete written and charted instructions. Knitters will need appropriate needles for sport weight yarn in the required sizes for working in the round, as well as tools for measuring and blocking the finished sweater. The schematic included on the final page of the pattern provides precise measurements for all available sizes, ensuring accurate fit before beginning the project.
The La Mascarada pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle colorwork and lace techniques. The straightforward nature of the mosaic and lace designs makes this an excellent project for expanding technical abilities. Both the body and sleeves offer flexibility in length, with the pattern clearly indicating where additional rows can be added to customize the garment to individual preferences. This adaptability ensures that knitters can create a sweater that perfectly suits their desired proportions and style.

I'd say it is intermediate to knit, and is a lovely pattern. Knitting up really nicely with 4ply wool
