Kure Beach Waves Shawl by Brigitte Reydams
What Is Being Made
Kure Beach Waves is a triangular knit shawl designed by Brigitte Reydams. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 44 inches across and 24 inches in length, making it an ideal size for draping across the shoulders or wearing as a versatile wrap. The design features a charted lace or textured pattern that develops as you work outward from a small cast-on.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level shawl employs several fundamental knitting techniques to achieve its finished structure. The pattern begins with a small cast-on of 3 stitches and uses strategic increases to expand the piece into a triangular shape. Increases are worked exclusively on right-side rows using make-one (M1) increases positioned symmetrically on either side of a center stitch, creating a balanced, geometric growth pattern. The shawl is constructed with a charted pattern section spanning 32 rows, followed by continued stockinette stitch borders on the first and last 6 stitches of each row. Stitch markers are used to clearly delineate the border sections from the central patterned area, helping crafters maintain consistency throughout the expanding rows.
Stitches and Stitch Pattern
The primary stitches used in Kure Beach Waves include:
- Knit stitch (K) – forms the stockinette borders and structural elements
- Purl stitch (P) – creates textural contrast, particularly in the alternating purl rows of the early increases
- Make-one increase (M1) – used symmetrically to expand the shawl width while maintaining balanced shaping
- Charted pattern stitches – a 32-row repeat that forms the decorative center of the shawl, likely incorporating lace or textured elements typical of shawl design
The gauge is 5 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch, which is standard for worsted-weight yarn and helps determine the final dimensions of the completed piece.
Materials and Tools
Kure Beach Waves requires 2 skeins of Malabrigo Washted yarn in the main color, plus 1 skein of contrast yarn for optional finishing. Malabrigo Washted is a worsted-weight yarn, providing good stitch definition and drape suitable for shawl construction. Knitters will need Size 7 circular needles to accommodate the increasing stitch count as the shawl expands. A G crochet hook is included as an optional tool for reverse crochet finishing, which can add a decorative, professional edge to the completed shawl if desired. The downloadable PDF format allows crafters to print or reference the pattern digitally while working.
