Product Description

This little Christmas Angel was inspired by the kōwhai tree, a native New Zealand tree that flowers in spring. While this pattern was designed using DK weight yarn, it can be made using any weight of yarn with an appropriate hook size {eg using a 1 mm hook and Pearl 8 cotton I made an angel that was 6 cm (2 ½”) tall and 5.5 cm (2”) wide}. If you are planning on using a yarn that is thicker than DK weight you may find it tricky if you wish to make the version with beads. Feel free to use whatever combination of colours you like. I have created a few of these now, in a range of different colour combinations.

For my original design I used 4 seasons Flinders Cotton 8 ply (Colours A and B) and 4 Seasons Brighton Cotton Blend 8 ply (Colour C) in the following quantities: Colour A (Green) 8 g (18 m, 20 yds) Colour B (Yellow) 13 g (30 m, 33 yds) Colour C (Brown) 4 g (8 m, 8 yds)

Kōwhai Christmas Angel Crochet Decoration

What Is Being Made

The Kōwhai Christmas Angel is a small crocheted decorative ornament inspired by the kōwhai tree, a native New Zealand plant known for its bright yellow flowers that bloom in spring. The name "kōwhai" derives from the Māori word for yellow. This finished decoration is a versatile project suitable for Christmas displays, gift embellishments, or year-round decorative use. The angel can be made in various sizes depending on yarn weight and hook selection, ranging from miniature versions approximately 6 cm (2½ inches) tall and 5.5 cm (2 inches) wide when worked with fine cotton, to larger interpretations using heavier yarns.

Techniques and Construction Methods

This intermediate-level crochet project employs fundamental crochet techniques to construct a three-dimensional decorative figure. The pattern allows for creative customization through color selection, with the designer having created multiple versions using different color combinations. The construction method accommodates flexibility in yarn weight selection, making it accessible to crocheters with various yarn stashes. The pattern includes optional beading details, though the designer notes that beaded versions may be more challenging when using yarn heavier than DK weight due to the increased fabric density and reduced stitch definition.

Stitches Used

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the intermediate difficulty rating indicates the use of standard crochet stitches appropriate for creating a small, structured decorative figure. The pattern likely incorporates basic stitches combined in ways that create shaping and definition suitable for an angel form.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Kōwhai Christmas Angel pattern is designed to work with multiple yarn weights, providing flexibility for different crafting preferences and desired finished sizes:

  • Recommended Primary Yarn Weight: DK weight yarn is the designer's preferred choice for this pattern
  • Alternative Yarn Weights: The pattern successfully works with 4-ply yarn, Aran weight yarn, and fine cotton options such as 4 Seasons Flinders Cotton 8 ply
  • Yarn Quantity: DK weight yarn in three colors (or any number of colors according to crafter preference)
  • Hook Sizes: Appropriate hook sizing should match the selected yarn weight; for example, a 1 mm hook was used with Pearl 8 cotton to create a miniature 6 cm tall version
  • Optional Notions: Beads are available as optional embellishments, though their use is more practical with lighter yarn weights

Design Flexibility and Customization

This pattern emphasizes creative freedom in color selection. Crocheters may choose any color combination they prefer, allowing for personalized interpretations beyond traditional Christmas color schemes. The ability to work the pattern in various yarn weights means the finished angel can range from a delicate miniature accent piece to a more substantial decoration, making it suitable for different display spaces and gift-giving purposes.
