Knitted Sweaters in Hayfield Bonus Aran with Wool

What is Being Made

This downloadable PDF pattern from Hayfield provides instructions for knitting four distinct sweater styles in Bonus Aran yarn. The collection includes a Round Neck Sweater, Collared Sweater, Polo Neck Sweater, and Stand Up Neck Sweater. Each design is available in six size options ranging from 61/66cm (24/26 inches) to 112/117cm (44/46 inches) chest/bust measurements, making these versatile garments suitable for children through adults. The actual finished measurements range from 70cm to 119cm across the chest, with full lengths varying from approximately 48cm to 71cm depending on size.

Techniques Used

These sweater patterns employ fundamental knitting construction techniques appropriate for Aran-weight yarn work. The designs utilize standard flat knitting methods with pieces that are knitted separately and then seamed together. Sleeve lengths are adjustable, allowing customization based on individual measurements and preferences. The patterns accommodate multiple neckline variations—round neck, collared, polo neck, and stand-up neck styles—each requiring different finishing techniques to achieve the desired neckline appearance.

Stitches Used

While the complete stitch breakdown is not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, Aran-weight yarn projects typically incorporate a combination of knit and purl stitches to create texture and structure. The patterns are designed to work with standard knitting needles in two sizes, suggesting the use of ribbing for cuffs and waistbands alongside stockinette stitch or textured stitches for the main body sections.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Hayfield Bonus Aran in 400g balls. Round Neck Sweater uses shade 724 (1-2 balls depending on size). Collared Sweater uses shade 726 (1-2 balls depending on size). Polo Neck Sweater uses shade 725 (1-2 balls depending on size). Stand Up Neck Sweater uses shade 769 (1-2 balls depending on size). The pattern notes that Hayfield Bonus Aran Tweed is also suitable as an alternative yarn option.
  • Needles: One pair of 5mm (UK size 6 / USA size 8) knitting needles and one pair of 4mm (UK size 8) knitting needles for ribbing and finishing work.

Size Range and Fit

The pattern accommodates six distinct size options with specific measurements provided for each. Sizes range from extra small (61/66cm to fit) through to extra large (112/117cm to fit). Sleeve length is noted as adjustable across all sizes, with base measurements ranging from 33cm to 49cm, allowing knitters to customize the sleeve length to their specific requirements before binding off.

Yarn Weight and Fiber Content

These sweaters are knitted using Aran-weight yarn, which is a medium-heavy yarn weight ideal for creating substantial, warm garments with good stitch definition. The use of Hayfield Bonus Aran, a wool-blend yarn, provides durability and warmth suitable for everyday wear sweaters. The Aran weight ensures relatively quick knitting progress compared to lighter yarn weights while producing a fabric with excellent structure and drape.

I haven’t finished knitting this yet, but very pleased with progress so far! My only gripe is that for my son who is a 34” chest size, the 32-34 finished size is 34.75” a little on the snug side - the next size up is 36-38 finished size 39.75” - a bit on the big side! We have gone for “snug” but feel we needed a size in between.
