Knitted Casual Vest in Lion Brand Homespun – Pattern 1112

This free downloadable knitting pattern from Lion Brand produces a casual button-down V-neck vest worked primarily in reverse stockinette stitch. The design is figure-flattering, cleverly constructed in one piece up to the armholes, and features a distinctive decorative detail — a slipped-stitch fake seam that travels up each side, creating the elegant illusion of a traditional sewn seam without any actual seaming required. The pattern is rated Beginner skill level, making it an excellent project for newer knitters ready to move beyond the basics while still producing a polished, wearable garment.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a knitted casual vest — a sleeveless, V-neck, button-front waistcoat suitable for everyday wear. It is available in five sizes: Small, Medium, Large, 1X, and 2X, with finished chest measurements of 38, 41, 44, 48, and 51 inches respectively. The generous size range makes this pattern accessible and inclusive for a wide range of body types.

Construction Method

One of the most appealing aspects of this vest pattern is its seamless one-piece construction. The entire body — right front, back, and left front — is cast on together and worked back and forth on a circular needle, eliminating the need to seam side panels together after finishing. Knitters cast on between 122 and 166 stitches depending on size, then work upward until the piece reaches the armhole division point, at which stage the fronts and back are separated and worked individually.

A particularly clever design feature is the slipped-stitch fake seam. Rather than leaving the body as a seamless expanse of fabric, a single stitch is maintained at each side "seam" position: this stitch is knitted on right-side rows and slipped as if to purl on wrong-side rows, creating a neat vertical column that mimics the look of a traditional sewn seam. This adds visual structure and a professional finish to what is otherwise a very straightforward beginner construction.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Reverse Stockinette Stitch — the primary stitch pattern throughout the vest body. In reverse stockinette, the purl side of the fabric faces outward as the right side, giving the finished garment a distinctive soft, textured appearance. This is achieved by purling on right-side rows and knitting on wrong-side rows.
  • Slipped-Stitch Fake Seam — a single stitch at each side position is knitted on the right side and slipped purlwise on the wrong side, creating a decorative vertical ridge that travels up the sides of the vest to simulate a seam line.
  • Working Back and Forth on a Circular Needle — though a circular needle is used, the work is not joined in the round. Instead, the knitter works flat, turning at the end of each row. The circular needle simply accommodates the large stitch count comfortably.
  • V-Neck Shaping — the front neckline is shaped into a V, requiring decreases worked at the neck edges to create the angled opening.
  • Button Band and Buttonhole Construction — as a button-down vest, the pattern includes finishing for a front button band with three buttonholes to accommodate the three buttons.
  • Stitch Holder Usage — stitches for the back and opposite front are placed on Lion Brand Stitch Holders while each section is worked separately after the armhole division.

Materials

  • Yarn: Lion Brand Homespun® in colorway Corinthian — 3 skeins for Small and Medium, 4 skeins for Large, and 5 skeins for 1X and 2X. Lion Brand Homespun is a thick, textured yarn known for its soft, cozy hand and subtle color variation, which lends warmth and visual interest to the reverse stockinette fabric.
  • Needles: A size 10 (6 mm) 24-inch circular knitting needle is required. The 24-inch length is well suited to holding the full cast-on
