This pattern is worked using half double crochet stitch to create the knit effect, as all the stitches are worked in the back loop. The bucket hat is the same way you work a normal bucket hat where you decrease the double stitch in a previous stitch by one with every round to keep it flat then shape it into a beanie and later into a bucket hat.
