Klassikko (Classic) Striped Sweater in Novita WoollyWood – Pattern Summary
The Klassikko (Classic) Striped Sweater is a timeless, relaxed-fit pullover designed by Lea Petäjä for Novita. Knitted in bold horizontal stripes, this sweater blends classic Scandinavian style with a straightforward construction that makes it a satisfying project for intermediate knitters. The pattern is available as a free downloadable PDF and is worked in Novita WoollyWood, a DK-weight yarn well suited to colorwork and everyday wear.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a striped pullover sweater worked seamlessly in the round from the top down using raglan shaping. The finished garment features a classic silhouette with a comfortable body circumference ranging from 90 cm / 35½ in (XS) up to 138 cm / 54¼ in (XXL), a middle back length of 54–63 cm / 21¼–24¾ in, and an inner sleeve length of 40–43 cm / 15¾–17 in, depending on size. Six sizes are offered: XS, S, M, L, XL, and XXL, making the design accessible to a wide range of body types.
Construction and Techniques
The sweater is constructed seamlessly in the round, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, polished finish. The defining structural feature is the raglan yoke, which is shaped through regular decrease rounds worked simultaneously across the back, front, and both sleeves. This top-down raglan approach allows knitters to try on the garment as they go and adjust fit easily.
- Raglan decreases are worked at four marked points on every round and every second round in a carefully sequenced pattern. Specifically, decreases are repeated across the front and back 1(2)3(3)3(4) more times on every round and 24(28)20(23)17(25) times on every second round, shaping the yoke smoothly from neck to underarm.
- The decrease method used is skp (slip 1 knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over) on one side of each raglan marker and k2tog on the other, creating neat, mirrored decreases that lean in opposite directions for a tidy, professional finish.
- Striping is worked throughout the body and yoke as established in the pattern, creating the signature horizontal stripe effect that gives the sweater its classic character.
- Working in the round means the right side always faces the knitter, making it easy to maintain the stripe sequence and read the fabric.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch in the round (knit every round) forms the main fabric of the sweater, producing a smooth, flat surface that showcases the stripe pattern beautifully.
- skp – slip 1 knitwise, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over – a left-leaning decrease used on the left side of each raglan marker.
- k2tog – knit 2 together – a right-leaning decrease used on the right side of each raglan marker.
Stripe Pattern
The horizontal stripes are a central design element of the Klassikko sweater. The striping is established early and carried through consistently across the yoke and body. Working stripes in the round is straightforward because color changes occur at the beginning of each round, and the smooth stockinette fabric allows colors to transition cleanly. Knitters working with multiple colors will benefit from carrying yarns loosely up the inside of the work to avoid excessive weaving in of ends.
