Product Description
This design is a part of my first mini shawl collection - [Shawlaholics Ed.1][1].
Kavya is a one-color brioche shawl worked sideways and shaped into a crescent using short row wedges. The wedges use simple knit-purl texture stitches, while a beautiful brioche motif is repeated along the border. I love how the shape and the size of the shawl lets it sit on your shoulders comfortably and wrap around generously.
Kavya Shawl by Kavitha Raman
What is Being Made
Kavya is a crescent-shaped brioche shawl designed by independent designer Kavitha Raman. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a one-color shawl with finished dimensions of 62 inches in length (including border) and 15.75 inches in depth. The shawl is named after an ancient Indian literary style used by classical poets to compose epic poems, and the designer created this pattern as a reflection on adapting to extraordinary times.
Construction Method
The Kavya shawl is worked sideways, meaning knitting progresses from one side to the other rather than from top to bottom. The shawl is shaped into its distinctive crescent form using short row sections, a shaping technique that creates curves and depth without increasing or decreasing stitches in traditional ways. This sideways construction combined with strategic short rows allows the shawl to develop its elegant curved silhouette.
Stitch Techniques and Textures
- Brioche knitting — The primary stitch technique featured throughout the shawl, creating a textured, dimensional fabric
- Knit-purl texture — The body of the shawl combines knit and purl stitches to create visual interest and tactile variation
- Brioche motif border — A simple brioche pattern is repeated along the border, framing the shawl with a coordinated stitch detail
Yarn and Materials
The Kavya shawl is worked in 4-ply yarn weight, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for showcasing the brioche and textured stitches. The pattern is designed as a one-color project, simplifying yarn management while allowing the stitch patterns to be the visual focus. Specific yarn yardage requirements and needle size information are included in the complete downloadable PDF pattern.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore brioche knitting and short row shaping techniques. The combination of brioche stitches, textured stitch patterns, and short row construction requires intermediate-level understanding of these specialized techniques.
