Product Description
Made from just one ball of yarn (approx. 612 yards), including the little flower at the neckline, you’ll love crocheting this “show-stopping” poncho! We’ve used 140 grams of Kauni Effektgarn, a variegated 100% wool fingering weight yarn, to create our Kauni Poncho. This yarn is a dream to work with and the color changes give it that “wow factor”!
The poncho is made with 2 crocheted rectangles, which are seamed together to form the poncho: no shaping is required. A simple neckline edging is added, along with the little crocheted flower for that finishing touch.
The pattern includes many close-up photos, along with an assembly chart and a symbol crochet chart.
Finished mesurements: 15" from shoulder to bottom edge; 22" from neckline to bottom center point
Kauni Poncho by Susan Lowman
What is Being Made
The Kauni Poncho is an intermediate-level crochet garment designed by Susan Lowman. This poncho measures 15 inches from shoulder to bottom edge, with a total length of 22 inches from neckline to bottom center point. The design creates a versatile layering piece suitable for various occasions and seasons, offering the comfort and warmth of a traditional poncho silhouette with modern crochet construction.
Crochet Techniques Used
This project employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The construction utilizes repeating pattern sequences worked in rows, with careful attention to gauge and stitch placement. The pattern involves working increases and decreases to shape the poncho from the neckline outward, creating the characteristic draped silhouette. Blocking is recommended after completion to achieve proper dimensions and drape, as the gauge measurements provided are noted as being taken before blocking.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Kauni Poncho incorporates several fundamental crochet stitches to create its textured fabric:
- Single crochet (sc) – provides a tight, dense base fabric
- Double crochet (dc) – creates lighter, more open sections within the pattern
- Chain stitches (ch) – form the foundation and create openwork spaces
- Slip stitch (sl st) – joins rounds and transitions between sections
- Decreases (dec) – shape the garment by reducing stitch counts where needed
The pattern is built on repeating sequences worked across Rows 2-5, with one pattern repeat measuring 2½ inches wide. Four rows of the pattern measure 1⅜ inches in height before blocking, establishing the gauge for proper fit and drape.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Kauni Poncho is designed to be worked with fingering weight yarn, requiring approximately 140 grams or 612 yards (560 meters) of yarn in the color of your choice. The pattern specifies 100% wool yarn, which provides excellent elasticity, warmth, and drape characteristics ideal for poncho construction. The original design sample was created using Kauni Effektgarn, a 100% wool yarn featuring long color-changing sequences; the sample shown was worked in color EU, which transitions through red, orange, and yellow hues. This color-changing yarn creates visual interest and movement throughout the finished garment.
Tools and Notions
Construction requires a Size H/8 (5.0mm) crochet hook, or the size necessary to achieve proper gauge with your chosen yarn. A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the garment. Proper gauge is essential for this project, as the finished dimensions depend on achieving the specified measurements of 2½ inches per pattern repeat horizontally and 1⅜ inches per four rows vertically.
Skill Level and Project Scope
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, the Kauni Poncho is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with shaping techniques and pattern repeats. The project requires understanding of basic stitches, ability to follow written crochet abbreviations and pattern instructions, and familiarity with gauge measurement and blocking techniques. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Susan Lowman provides a complete project suitable for crafters seeking to expand their skills beyond beginner-level garment construction.
